KitchenAid model info

Greetings and pre Happy Holidays!
Negotiating a deal with a locally owned KitchenAid Superba. I asked the owner to supply a model number, but I don't know where to tell them to look. All they said was it's a Superba Monterey 21. Is this a Hobart produced unit? Where would the official model/serial number be located so I can instruct them where to look? I'm enclosing a pic if that will help ID it.

That is an early transitional machine, probably about 1988.  It was made after WP acquired Kitchenaid but the guts of that machine are ALL the Hobart/Kitchenaid design that essentially dates back to the 18 series from 1976.  

 

The one change that WP made was to add considerably more insulation to quiet the machines down, thus the moniker "WhisperQuiet" on the panel.

Open the door.  Model tag should be on the edge of the tub ... left side, IIRC.

I have the same Machine!

My Model number is KDSM-21A Built by Hobart not Whirlpool.
It has the heavy bituminous coating all along the top, sides, back and bottom of the tank which makes it very quiet compared to just having a fiberglass batting attached to the tub.
I also have a KUDS22 built by Whirlpool and it has the coating only halfway down the tank.
They both say "Whisper Quiet" and "Sure Temp Heating"

Both are great washing machines but both only have a single rinse.
The 22 added the Quick Wash cycle which gave the 8th button on the console. I had one in NY and like that option because you could skip the prewashes and then select a normal wash and get a longer main wash and could also use the sani rinse and heated or non heated dry.

The KDS-21 was introduced by Hobart in April of 1984.  

Whirlpool acquired Kitchenaid in January of 1986 after a somewhat prolonged legal battle.  

When was the Monteray introduced into the KD-21 lineup?

It's my understanding that the Monteray was mechanically identical to the KDS-21 it just had a sleeker trim package (read "no fake woodgrain!")

Last one....

Some staining on the door. Haven't really tried to do any cleaning. It was too late in the day to really fiddle with it. Underneath looks good, tho. No water stains like it had been leaking. The control panel area needs a good cleaning and the selection buttons stick. The CANCEL button won't release any depressed buttons. I didn't figure it was gonna be a plug and play machine, tho, so I'm not disappointed. It does have the bituminous felt in addition to a sound blanket wrapped around it. Even tho I wash most of my dishes by hand, I think this is going to be a great addition to the kitchen. Will keep you posted of any progress.

Cancel doesn't release the buttons directly, it's a cycle unto itself that advances the timer to the last drain increment, then probably to run the drying blower (without heat) for one increment, then off.  The buttons release when the handle is raised.

If the machine is at "normal" off at end of a cycle, Cancel will run through the timer advance / drain sequence and off again.

Good Looking Machine!

Not a bad looker! Looks pretty clean inside. A little cleanup will go a long way.

Only thing is that the top rack is not the original. It should have the 16 position upper rack. Adjustable up and down as well as the flex-o-dividers, but that rack looks brand new. You should be happy with it.
