KitchenAid Refrigerator KSCS25FTMS Front Trim Piece

My partner Dave notified me tonight that the trim panel for the ice and water dispensers on our main refrigerator had come loose at the top.

 

There's an obvious gap between the top of the dispenser trim piece and the door panel surface.  I was able to pull the top of the trim piece forward, and as I did this I heard something fall behind it.  I saw a second item fall, which looked like some sort of white plastic clip.

 

I don't know how to remove the dispenser panel assembly to get behind it and see what's broken.  There are two screws that become visible at the bottom rear after removing the drip tray.

 

I've attached an exploded view that resembles what I have, but it doesn't indicate how the top of the panel surround attaches to the door.  The trim piece I'm referring to is item 21.  I'm wondering if item 20 represents the clip(s?) I saw.

 

I have no idea how this happened.  Dave denies all knowledge, but I know I didn't do it. 

 

Any advice on the parts I need to replace and how to accomplish it would be greatly appreciated.

What are the two numbers at the end of your model number? 00, 01 or 02? Item 20 is the dispenser led lighting...

Hey Andy,

 

I didn't see the two final numbers on the invoice so checked inside the fridge.  They are 01.

 

I also realized that the model number is one character different from what was originally purchased, because the fridge was replaced under warranty by KA for issues with the ice maker under-shooting the bin when dropping crescents, so we got the next model year.

 

It probably makes no difference, but the corrected model number is KSCS25FVMS01.

You should be able to pull those two screws behind the tray and the whole dispenser front will drop down a smidge. Enough to disengage some tabs and then pull forward, exposing the guts of the dispenser. Here's a breakdown for your machine...

Wow!  Andy, thanks for going to the trouble of listing the parts.

 

I'll get at this either later today or tomorrow and report back with my findings.

OK, this was easy to figure out, but the good news stops there.

 

The problem lies with part #1 on the diagram, which I don't even want to consider replacing.  You can barely make them out, but about an inch in from each end along the front edge at the top of part #1, there is a clip.  Both have broken off.  How that happened is beyond me.  I know it's nothing I did, and we haven't had cleaning people in here for nearly a year.  Dave can become fixated on strange things since his stroke, but I can't imagine him trying to pry the panel off.

 

I'm going to try and get away with JB Weld.  The breaks are clean.  I'll leave the panel detached while the adhesive cures.  I've got nothing to lose.

You're right...

You DO have nothing to lose. Part #1 is non serviceable. It is foamed into place and you'd have to order a whole door to get it. The freezer door assy only retails from $700 to $1150 depending on if you have stainless or mono stainless. Nice, huh? Sounds like you have a possible solution and I am interested in how it plays out.

Nice of Whirlpool to integrate such a cheap-ass retainer component into a part that requires purchasing a whole new door!  We only paid half price for the fridge brand new.  It was in the clearance center of a local appliance dealer. 

 

There are two ways to look at this.  1) Purchasing a new door would bring the cost for the fridge up to about normal retail.  Or 2)  Just a new door would cost as much as the whole fridge did.

 

JB Weld is the clear choice here.  I applied it this evening and am letting it cure overnight.  We'll see what Tuesday morning holds.  Or doesn't.

Success!

The repair worked.  I slathered it on liberally since the repaired areas wouldn't be seen.  The top edge of the panel is once again snug against the surface of the door.

 

I was going to take pictures but forgot.  I'd rather not push my luck by taking the panel off again.  I think the repair will hold indefinitely, providing nobody tries to pry the panel off from the top (again?).
