Lady K swap?
Mickeyd - A '63 Lady K is one of my few dream machines. In this case though, I'm not sure you're going to want this particular lady. A day or two ago? Yeah, probably, but not today. She is mechanically beautiful underneath, but she has had a harrowing day.
I'll spill the story: I acquired this machine from an appliance dump/graveyard/service store about 10 days ago, mainly to keep it from being crushed - the container was only feet away. I hauled it and another 1972 cohort the 30 or so miles toward home in 100+ degree heat, only to find that our warehouse where I planned to temporarily store them was locked early. Tired, I "hid" them both behind my storage trailer way back in the corner, out of sight.
Yesterday I went to "visit" them at lunch, all was well. Plans were to begin the resto this weekend. I was looking forward to documenting it, etc. Well, something drew me to stop there again on my way home, only 4 hrs. later....THEY WERE GONE. Huge adrenalaine flood for sure.
I was all kinda rattled to say the least. The eliptical machine at the gym is still smoking....After two trips to the whse. to secure my stuff inside and in the trailer, I came in this morning and was told that the machines weren't stollen, they'd been hauled to the dump because our property manager didn't realize they were mine. HE DOES NOW!
Magically, I was able to get to the dump (at warp 5) before they were crushed by a massive front end loader. After explaining my screw up of not putting the machines away more securely, the site manager at the yard let me take them both home. They were both laying on their sides, and I cringed, figuring they'd been thrown out of a truck. Strangely, the other machine (a near pristine '72 plastic top 60 series) seems almost unscathed, whereas Ms. Catmore, which had been dirty but very nice looking, has taken many hits on the porcelain top. The light bulb is shattered, and the barn door is off a hinge, which I hope is not now broken. The lid was literally ripped off, both hinges mangled. It looks fixable though.
I don't mind touching up a spot or two on porcelain, but this machine is going to need six or seven square inches of paint and she'll never be as dandy looking as your '63 unless someone has a whole top to swap (done that many times). Stranger things have happened but I've only seen 10-year newer belt-drive tops hanging around lately.
I was thrilled to get the machines back at all, and now I'll enjoy working on them all the more, but sadly Mike, I'm not sure my specific coppertone Lady is one that you're going to want.
I am intriqued because the basket is full of dried water marks and dirt, it won't hold water, and who knows what else is wrong, but I'm looking forward to the challenge of sprucing up what I can.
I'll keep you posted and will try to get some pics of the before and after. Believe it or not my parts place still has two bottles of Coppertone touch up paint, so cross your fingers that it matches....
