i felt like crying watching this video of the last ever christmas at the old ferguson tv factory in gosport they were really the last of the well made sets before thomson took over... the sets being made in the video is my favorite tv the A51F. its sad really.

Glad to know I'm not the only retro 70s/80s-early 90s T.

I have a Baird (thorn made for radio rentals) video recorder from the late 80s/early 90s as well as a 1970s 12" monochrome Ferguson portable T.V.

I would assume both of these came out of this factory :)

There were others too

I guess its a bit different for me because I am old enough to remember these TVs etc on sale. Mind you I think you will find that Ferguson/Baird VCRs (the first ones at least) were badged JVCs. IMHO the main reason why VHS because so popular over Betamax in the UK was simply that Radio Rentals carried these JVCs over the (better) Betamax. Anyway back to TVs ....

Although most I suppose most people would define the definative 70s TV as the Keracolor (no relation to me I might add!) the one I would go for EVERY time is the Murphy

Why VHS Won:

It is true that VHS had some lucky breaks with big retaillers choosing to carry that format instead of Beta (although one of the biggest, Sears, went with Beta at first).

But the big factor was the cost of tape. My first VCR, a Sony Betamax, could tape for only two hours on one cassette, which cost $29.95 USD. A VHS machine could offer six hours of recording on one cassette, which was priced the same as Beta. Picture quality wasn't that great on VHS's six-hour mode, but people didn't care - they could tape three times as much as a Betamax owner for the same cost.

It was too bad. I, like everyone else who'd bought Beta, eventually switched over to VHS, but I always missed the picture quality of Beta - it was way better than VHS, surpassed only when DVD became available.

Obviously, tape prices came down - and Sony eventually got Beta's taping time up to five hours with some machine tweaks and a special extended-time cassette - but by that time, the damage was done. By '87, you could hardly find Beta stuff, and it got worse from there.

Outrageous Orange!

Nuff said lol......

I would imagine any of those would make quite a tidy sum on Ebay ..........

P.S If any UK ppl have seen Life on Mars in the 3rd episode of the first series a DeccaColour TV is seized in a raid on stolen goods and ends up in the pub. Not only is it an authentic 1973 model(I have a Which report on it) but it appears to have never been used- it still has a sticker on the screen with DeccaColour and something along the lines of DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE TUBE. It also has a hanging tag attached to the on/off volume control!

That factory floor was so cheerfully decorated. I don't think any American mfg would allow that. First of all, it may be offensive to SOME employees, on who's dime are they working when putting up/taking down the decorations?

Personally, I like it!
