I think the last "real" Maytags that were manufactured was around 1996-98, before Maytag started making the Junk that led to their demise. Does anyone have a picture of the control panel of the last good washers? I'm trying to locate one locally and I know in 1996 the Dependable Care machines were still the good ones with the straight vane agitator. I know a year or so later they introduced a "cork screw" dual action agitator-- do those machines still have the good tranny and motors and good to own?

Yes. They are everything that you would want from a "Dependable Care" machine. They did use the short stroke transmission introduced in 1989. BUT….the also used the Load Sensor agitator which was the best dual-action agitator ever commercially produced. Models you want to look for are the LAT2500 and and the LAV3600.
The last "REAL" Maytag came off the assembly line in Newton on the 22nd of December 2006.
It was an LAV3600 Signed inside the front cabinet by everyone involved in its manufacture. It is on display at the heritage museum in Newton. Here's a pic from my visit in 2012:

I'm curious. Why do you say that the load sensor agitator "was the best dual-action agitator ever commercially produced."? Is it because the auger top did not turn unless the load mandated it? The argument could be made that the KitchenAid dual action agitator with the larger fins coupled with the 3 speed motor that used the medium speed for more gentle reglar agitation was just as good or, perhaps, a better approach to dual action agitation.
