Visible Top Wringer
In its day was considered a major design improvement, well at least to Whirlpool who also sold a similar machine under Kenmore brand.
Idea was one could see things going through the wringer more easily, and or deal with laundry that wrapped itself around the rollers.

Whirlpool Open Top Safety Wringer
This was the best designed powered wringer ever sold in the US.
Not only could see better what is happening as items go through but it was easy to shut off and release roll pressure, all you had to do was hit any part of the white wringer housing or just pull back on the clothing or your hand if it got caught in the rolls.
The overall machine was better designed than Maytag Was, the agitator provides better turn-over with less dragging the clothes through the water, and the High-Post agitator design is more durable than Mts Low-Post where water eventually gets into the gear case.

Had considered the WP wringer washer
As one was long on offer locally going for very little money. But ultimately decided to go with a Maytag for several reasons.
First was size, the Maytag seemed more "compact" than the WP.
Next spares and other bits seemed more easily sourced for the Maytag versus WP.
True, nothing can beat a "surgilator" for agitating wash day glory, but in the end we all have to make do don't we?
