Interesting letter from the Iraqi desert:

"My name is Sgt.-- with the TN Army National Guard. I am writing to let you know about the quality of your products. I have been deployed now for 13 months with 8 ½ of them in Northern Iraq.

For years my family has been using Whirlpool washers and dryers. I find them to be the best of quality. While I was on active duty with the U.S. Army at Fort Polk, LA., I won a washer at a grocery store giveaway. We used that machine for 13 years with only a timer having to be replaced. I have three girls and my wife, does a lot of washing, so you can imagine the usage. When it came time to buy new machines, there was no question as to why and to what brand it would be.

So to my surprise when we got here there were two Whirlpool washers that looked rough. These washers wash hundreds of loads a week and the unit before us had them who knows how long. Soldiers, being ever resourceful, have managed to remove knobs, switches, screws, etc. We have no direct water hook-up so we fill them with a water hose. One of the washers has been banded together with metal strapping. These washers are pretty much out in the open and have been through dust storms, rain storms, and in 140 degrees plus heat. It amazes me they still operate.

It's good to know America still makes products that last and Whirlpool is a leader in that. Being so far away from home and with stress being ever constant, believe it or not, it is relaxing just to wash clothes. I hope and pray to be leaving Iraq soon and that the unit that relieves us continues to get service from these machines. Thanks for your products, and my family will continue using them."

yep, whirlpool are a good brand

when we moved to the house i am in now, the previous owners had left their Whirlpool 8100 series washer and it is still going string 4 years later, not to mention how ever long they had it before. It has neaded a bit of tweaking here and there but apart from that its a great machine, just wish it had a softner dispenser.

Think "Downy Ball" dispenser available in supermarket.
Let me know if you want /need me to send you one or more.

Works, of course, with any brand softener.

(Actually I can't recall WP having an agitator-mounted one in general: I am assuming your machine is T/L).

toggleswitch

toggleswitch,
there is no such thing as a Downey Ball in Australia (i wish), how does it work again? Does it release during the first spin somehow?? And yes my machine is a t/loader. I believe that there are attachable softner dispensers in the parts department of our local whit goods salesmen, i just have not been bothered to go down and ask yet, i feel a bit embarrassed, an 18 yr old big strapping boy asking for a fabric softner dispenser :)

Hi Guys,
I totally agree I have a Whirlpool 3LSC8255EQ1 Top Loader 8.2Kg 18Lbs capacity; it is almost 8 years old now. It has done thousands of wash loads over the years with spotless clean results and has been totally 100% reliable, it’s my favorite washer and I would buy another Whirlpool without hesitation.
Steve my Whirlpool has the Extra Rollover Plus™ dual action agitator with fabric softener dispenser, I like the idea of the Downy ball as it would keep the dispenser clean.

All the best.
Hugh

Thanks for that, Leslie, I'll bet it's nice to see a little bit of the home-grown brands so far from home. Some enterprising salesperson at WP should be selling the military the Resource Saver models to save some water in the desert!

I suppose the one being blown up with a grenade in the video Peter posted a link to had a broken coupler...;-)

MGB:

Yes the Downy dispenser opens during the spin and releases during the rinse fill.

There is a piece on a small chain attached to the lid. The centrifugal force of the spin pulls the lid and surrounding gasket down via that cork shaped "plunger"/piece.

Rinse water and agitation pull the last remainig bit of softener out of the sphere.

Actually, NOW I recall Sears' softener dispenser. But still cant' recall one on a WP. I would guess it's the same...

We have had great service using WP products. I think most of their products across the board are very reliable.

BTW Leslie,...doesn't Whirlpool have a birthday coming up this month? 94 yrs.?

Fabric Softener Dispenser

Hi Steve,
Here is a picture of my Whirlpool Top Loader you can see the Fabric Softener Dispenser on the top of the agitator.

All the best.
Hugh

For me anyway--it is wild to see the nameplate on a WP T/L (at the back of the lid area) read:

230v 50hz.

Hugh, another question.
Does this machine come with:

1- no plug
2- a Euro-plug (round pins)
3- a Brit fused plug?

Do appliances there still come with no plugs, to be fitted by end-user?

I DO remember though that Brit "BL" Black = Euro "BL" blue
(Neutral conductor) whereas Brit Red= Euro Brown (hot/live).

Did I get that right?

Hi Steve,
It comes with a molded on UK 3 pin 13 Amp fused plug. As for the wiring colour codes in the UK we have been using brown = live/hot, blue= neutral and green yellow = earth/ground for more than 20 years now, the old red, black, green is long gone but to be truthful I think the old colours were actually more sensible.

Best regards,
Hugh

Hi Steve,
Sorry I missed your question. You ask if UK appliances come with fitted plugs, the answer is yes; it is law that all electrical goods sold in the UK must have fitted plugs.

Best regards,
Hugh

Hugh...

What detergent do you use in your TL there? Do you use a high-suds detergent, or just a larger quantity of an automatic? I've heard the Tesco High Suds powder has a "vintage" scent, but I've not tried it before. I heard it's great. I have some Daz high-suds, but I've not tried that yet either. I'm having too much fun with my FL!
