Laundry related ads from 1963 Trailer Topics Magazine

Dennis won some cool early to mid sixies "Trailer Topics" magazines off of *that all consuming auction website*. The 1963 issues have some advertisements that you all will enjoy looking at.

First off is this early american offering of the Hoover spinner washer. I actually had one of these that I rebuilt when I was in high school. I recall that I could not yet drive or at least drive by myself so my Mother drove me to the far flung reaches of South Minneapolis to track down the motor I needed for this machine. Aren't Moms great? I always thought that the stainless tub on these earlier machine had better wash action than the later plastic tub models, although I loved the spin rinse on the later machines.

A few pages later in the November 1963 issue...

The New Products column heralds the latest model of Monitor Wringer (waves at Petek).

I had one of these fall into the big gay black hole of life as well. They are fun!

I nearly missed this ad since it does not feature a picture of a washer to grab my attention...but it is about washers.

Because you know that she probably has a load of wash going whilst she vacuums her house in her cool hairdo! My ex-sister-in-law had one of these and I was NOT impressed, but then it IS only an electric broom, not a full power cleaner.

David, Thanks for the trip in the Way Back Machine (every dog should have a boy). Did the first Hoover have one or two impellers for washing? I have only seen the newer ones with the white tubs.

How are you and Dennis and Big Kitty Boy doing? I am sure everyone misses the 4th membert of your merry band. Has BKB stopped feeling so bad?

Mike and i were just talking about these; check the thread above.

We're having Hawaii-like weather today. We have never had an October this warm. I'm still swiming in Lake Erie. Hope all is well. Great pic on the new thread!

Moms are great! What would we have done..........?

Do you know how fast the Hoovers spin. I'm betting you do, and i have no clue except that it's really really fast like a vacuum turbine, which is exactly what it sounds like. Did they use the same motor for the spinner as in the vacs?

Hi Tom- The Hoovers always only had the one impeller. The machine with two impellers you are thinking of was the Maytag Porta-washer, which was so very similar to the Hoover that I'm surprised Hoover did not sue Maytag (but I think they just ripped off their dryer design instead).

Big Kittyboy is doing OK. He still howls once in a while, but then so do I. I think he likes being the center of attention once again. All we can say is that Bruno was a bad boy and bad boys always break your heart...

Hello MickeyD!- Glad you are enjoying Hawaiian weather and thanks for mentioning the photo thread. I think the old Hoover spinners went at 2100 rpm. I really liked using these machines as long as you don't have any really large heavy towels or overalls to deal with.

Hoover - Who Better..

Hi David, thanks for the pics down memory lane, always interesting to see the different adverts etc...the first Hoover Twinny was produced in 1957....50yrs OLD This Year...

They where manufactured in the brand new Hoover Washing Machine Factory in Merthyr Tydfyl, South Wales, UK...a typical mining area, benefitting from massive regeneration, sponsored by the government, with mega incentives to industry...

It took a 6lb washload in each of the washer & spinner, an average wash took only 4mins with the famous"Hoover Boiling Water Action", the UK machines had a heater for the water, and a linked thermostat/timer...Hoover only ever had one paddle or pulsator and revved at 545rpm, the spinner spun at 2,100rpm .

Now that monitor is a newer version than mine but it certainly looks almost identical to ChesterMIkes early Hoover single tub doesn't it.

We're just trailer trash at heart...

Hi Greg- No, we do not have a large library of mobile home stuff-just a small collection. We have start looking for more things like this as there are NO mobile homes and travel trailers here in Hawai'i. I am really getting some itchy feet and would love to go back to full time RVing. That will be our next adventure when we are ready to leave paradise.

I will be sharing more scans from these magazines with all of you later.

Chestermike- Thanks for the history on the Hoover twinnies. I wish you could still buy one today. The model in the ad I scanned was I believe model 0500. I think this was the earliest model available on this side of the pond.

The model 0500

Hey guys
As far as i know (Mike correct me if im wrong ) the 0500 was basically the same machine as our model 3334 and was made in Merthyr and shipped over the pond. The 2nd Us model was possibly also produced over here before North Canton was equipped for twin tub production . The major difference between uk models and those exported to the us was the heater - the only uk models without a heater were the budget versions whereas presumably due to the voltage issue us versions were not heated. Hoover Twinnys

Hi Seamus, as far as I know the 0500 was the first USA twinny and was produced at Merthyr and shipped...The 0500 is the same as our Hoover 3345A (Grey Lid) David, Greg, Pete & everyone, where you aware of a twinny with a blue lid like ours??

This is what I know to date:
Hoover 0500 US Twinny = Hoover UK 3345A Twinny
Hoover 0510 US Twinny = Hoover UK 3301 (Nearest,No Heater & Empty Hose that basically comes from the pump, through the tub top),
Hoover 6681 US Twinny = Hoover UK3310, non auto
Hoover Gregs Yellow US Twinny = Hoover UK3314, with Auto Rinse

Below is Roberts 0500 he had at the 2001 convention.

This is the next, similar to the UK 3301, but we had the snap in hose, whereas this comes up from the pump, through the tub top..

Now I think this is Scotts twinny, I recognise that cooker as Gregs old one , now with Estate Sale Gary in Minni...this like our 3310 no autorinse etc..

And lastly

I used it that much at both the 2005 & 2007 conventions I`ve forgotten the model number????HELP, this is like our 3314 with Auto Rinse..ours still had the metal tubs because of the heater etc.. I`m sure there are more, call Laundress & Tom A & everyone???

Hoover Lark=Hoover Quik Broom?

Hey, partscounterman! That Hoover Lark advertised in that old Trailer Topics mag looks almost like a 1979 Hoover Quik Broom that my mother-in-law owned for years--and still kicks ass when it comes to cleaning up little messes! 1963...almost 45 years ago...what a shame today's Hoovers suck for all the wrong reasons!

It's Model number 0519
