What you used (along with various sticks) to fetch laundry out of water when doing by hand or semi-automatic washing machine.
These things were a boon to helping keep wash day red hands at bay before rubber gloves came along. Not using them meant hours of plunging ones hands in hot soapy water....
You also used these things to fetch laundry out of water and feed into mangle or wringer. This helped reduce accidents like getting ones fingers (or other body parts) caught in the mangle.
