AWESOME Job Robert!!!

Who'd have thought a kid who rode the short bus all the way through school would have tried to pull something like this off...

Thanks Jeff,

Guys please, no more name calling and the like on this subject. The perp has been exposed, no need to throw any more fuel on the fire.

As the parent of a special needs child, I must call you on your comment of "riding the short bus", Jeff. I don't care what Reggie has done, that comment is totally insensitive and absolutely heartbreaking coming from anyone. We have other members who have different needs from physical challenges and disabilities who I'm sure take offense to this as well. So many advances have been made in recent years to normalize the lives of those with special needs and bring them out of the shadows and end the persecution many have endured for far too long.

I am horrified by your comment Jeff, you have no idea the pain you can cause with words like this - especially to those who often cannot defend themselves. How dare you? This is really unforgivable.

Mandy, that's a major overreaction. When used in this way, the phrase doesn't infer anything other than intentional stupidity, and this in turn doesn't relate at all to people's medical conditions.

I mean even books have been written with this phrase in their titles, and no one seems up in arms about it.

Good try...

Thanks, but no. There is more to this thread topic and off-board story than you are aware. This IS what he meant:

"Because of this second use of the buses, "taking the short bus" and other phrases to that effect have become pejorative slang terms used to imply that the subject is mentally challenged (or simply stupid). Some of these terms include but are not necessarily limited to the following: "retard carts," "syndrome trucks", "tard carts", "window lickers", "sped sleds", "sped-ex", "retard rockets", "the Magic School Bus", and "the magic wagon." Also the term "off the short bus" is used, as in, "Where'd they recruit you, off the short bus?""

Relating something to "the short bus" is just as bad as calling something gay! I'm so tired of and so glad to be done with high school simply because of that, these days calling something gay is the exact same thing as calling something stupid or fucked up. Whether or not there is some kind of established "new definition" of a word or phrase, doesn't mean that it's ok to use it in that way especially when it hurts someone's feelings. I can't tell you how many times I've called people out on using the word gay as a synonum for stupid, and their reply is simply, "not like GAY gay, you know, like, stupid gay..."

... Their is no such thing as "stupid gay"!!!!!

I was a teacher for 34+ years and often worked with students with special needs. I can tell you first hand that words like that do hurt! I too realize that Reggie made a mistake on here but there is no excuse for this. Until you have seen first hand the hurt comments like that can bring you really can't understand. I am always amazed at how those with special needs can take comments like these which they fully understand and still remain loving individuals.

I agree with you guys, I was disappointed to see that comment as well. I probably should have just deleted it, but I try and use the magic delete wand very carefully. Sometimes I just don't know what to do.

"Sometimes I just don't know what to do."

Robert, I think you've been very good at knowing what to do.

It cannot be easy, with so many different personalities.

The situation with the meanness that was directed toward the Vacuumland member seems to have been going on for a long time (I'm assuming this is a continuation of that).

You've impressed me with your calm resolve, your humor, and most of all, your consistency to speak out against what you see is an injustice against a friend, and, really, this site's "sister site and best friend", as Vacuumland is billed at aw.org's introductory page.

You're doing quite well, I think.

Hmm, Robert must have deleted the "short bus" comment so I missed it. I'm sure, as what would be called today a "special needs child", I rode the short bus most of my education life and endured many a snide comment about being a "reetard".

Look Folks.....

We all went to grade school, and high school (I hope!), and I think most or all of us can well freaking remember what it feels like to be called something derogatory. Back then, we were too young to realize that name calling is silly, stupid and immature, and as adults now the "sticks and stones" philosophy pretty much applies. But that doesn't do those who are afflicted with such disabilities any good. So choose your words carefully, especially in the company of strangers who may well have such an affliction, or have someone they love dearly with a disability.

I'm sure many of us remember well what it was like to be called "faggot", "fruit", "queer", etc., when we were younger (and maybe even when some were older). It doesn't hurt those who now walk in our shoes today any less.

I'm new here but I have to ask

What surprises me is no one says WHY Reggie had to do that in the first place? How you all were at one time tolerable but now are mortal enemies. You all act like he's a terrorist, something's fucked up here

First of all, welcome and hi! I hope you find much here to your taste.

I have been a member of this group for many years now - and, with only one or two exceptions - everybody here is just as friendly and helpful and forthright as may be. Unusually so for a virtual group.

Personally, I have not the slightest idea why the "reggie" matter has come up for discussion here - it does not pertain to AutomaticWasher.org in any way, shape form or otherwise. It does seem to involve somebody or other in another group or groups of collectors, who (forgive the run on sentence here) said or did or did not say or do something which caused people in that group or groups to be quite angry.

Apparently, there is an overlap amongst the members of both or all three groups and the discussion was continued here by some individuals.

Please don't assume that "we all" are being hateful and hurtful towards this person/these persons - nor, please should you assume without the full background that the people responding here are being unmerciful. I don't know what is involved, but I trust Robert unconditionally. I have followed his work closely here and in other fora; I have never seen him unfair or unjust.

I can see why this would bother you, it is distasteful and alarming - just, please, don't assume we are all "that way" here or, worse, that all we do is fight and hiss and spit.

Imperial and Deluxe are reserved for on-topic questions. The Sandbox (here in Super) gets flushed by Robert regularly, it is not archived and is really just for people to let their hair down. You may get better answers or details from other people so, in closing - welcome.

OK

First: My apologies to those I offended. My comments were directed soley at one individual, and not meant to hurt/offend/upset anyone else.
If I have done so, I am truly sorry. Not my intent.

That being said, maybe you guys need to take a little walk in my shoes and understand whats its been like to have to put up with this crap for 9+ years.

A heartfelt request:

I am heartily sick and tired of the various and sundry vacuum club(s) hysteria, accusations, recriminations, attacks, retributions and general abuse of threads which have nothing whatsoever to do with the problem of the week over there.
Lots of folks, myself included, are vacuum fans. I enjoy the postings, the pictures, the enormous efforts on restoration and just plain enjoyment...
But I can not ever recall taking my disagreements with other people here, over there and thrashing them out.
It's just a request and nothing more - but please, if you have to inflict this on us, couldn't you at least have the good graces to start a new thread, label it something like: Vacuum (chose the current group in turmoil)Hatethread. You probably should number them serially, too. When you reach #999 or the end of the month, whichever comes first, you could start over again.
That way, I could see it, think "yup, they're still at it" and pass it on by, unread. Please leave our threads alone.

Oh no you don't

Nope, were done with this now. The perpetrator has been trapped and caught red handed and more importantly our friend has been completely vindicated. There is nothing more to be said on this subject. I am not going to allow this thread to continued by someone who set up a new blank profile, supposedly knows "nothing" of the situation at hand and by sheer coincidence their IP address is centered in the St. Louis metropolitan area (uh huh).

Guys when you see a new profile added and someone adding fuel to a fire that they don't belong in, this should send up red flags and arouse and caution in everyone here. We have an open door policy here at aw, but there is a bit of danger that can go along with that freedom.

I apologize to everyone that this particular thread got hijacked by me but I certainly do not regret it.

Please let's move on.
