After years of owning only DD Whirlpool machines, I purchased a LG WM8100HVA front loader. I like the machine so far, but I'm wondering if something is wrong with it. More often than not, it has a real hard time balancing itself to the point where the tub hits the side of the machine and I can watch it bow out. I'm new to front loaders and the tub itself seems to be able to move around quite a bit front to back. Also, I can push down and deflect the back of the tub some too. Not so much on the front of it. The first thing I did was was make sure it was level and it is. Anything else I should be looking at? Is it normal to have the tub move this much? I don't want to end up damaging it running it like this. Sometimes it works completely fine too. Than you in advance for any advice you have!

Are you washing large single items (1 bath towel, 1 pair of jeans, a bathrobe, 1 sweater or a blanket) by itself, or a load of lighter thing and one heavy item like I listed above?

I have been using front load washers almost exclusively for the last 20+ years and this is the ONLY reason I can think of that would cause any front load washer to be SO off balance the tub assembly would bang against the cabinet.

Now that I think about it, I did have 1 towel in with one of the unbalanced loads. Should the tub be free to move around that much though? It really doesn't take much to throw this one off balance.

FL tubs are very easy to move side to side. Not up/down.
That’s very normal.
A small or large/bulky unbalanced load could make this happen time to time.
My MT FL will do it usually on jeans or blankets loads. Tap the sidewalls till it can re-balance itself to be an acceptable spin.
I don’t see any issue unless it’s going this to you on almost every load.

Yeah side to side it moves very easy, up and down at the front doesn't move much at all. If I reach in and push up and down at the back of the tub,it moves up and down a fair bit. Does that all sound right?

"This sounds totally normal but if you're that worried, go to a big box store and push on the floor models for comparison."

That might not be a good idea - the transit bolts/bars could still be fitted on the display models, restricting tub movement.

I was at Home Depot the other day and tried exactly that and yeah the transit bolts were in place as the tub wouldn't budge at all.

normal operation

I think what you describe is quite normal. I have an LG front loader and occasionally it will thump against the cabinet as it goes into spin, especially on a heavy/unbalanced load. Sometimes it will balance as it ramps up and proceed into a smooth spin, and once in a while if it's too unbalanced it will stop and redistribute the load. This usually happens with things like rugs, towels or a single large item (which we should not wash single large items, ha-ha.) Check troubleshooting section of your owner's manual; it states an occasional thumping sound is normal. Since you said you did have a single towel in the load I would say not to worry about it. If it was doing it on every load I would call for service.

The only other thing I wanted to mention is I have seen it stop and rebalance itself except for one time it got so bad that it caused the front rubber seal to pop away from the door and water leaked out. I stopped it, shifted the load and then it was fine. Is the machine supposed to stop itself when that happens? If it is, then maybe it's time I call for service.

I've only had it a few weeks. Bought it "new" as a "scratch and dent" model from a local shop. They provide a 1 year warranty on it.
