I recently acquired a very rare washer sold for a brief period in Canada in 2002. It is most popular in Australia, Mexico and other countries but I'm hoping someone has some knowledge on why this problem might be occuring.

When I first got the machine it had a pretty bad leak, which turned out to be the hose that goes from the tub to the pump. I replaced the hose and while I was down there cleaned a few coins out of the pump. The issue now however is that it sometimes wont drain. Some cycles complete just fine, others it will stop draining randomly in both wash and rinse drain cycles. This seemed to only happen every second or third load when I got it about a month ago, but now its happening almost every load. I sometimes have to shut it off and wait up to 5 hours before it will drain again. It also sometimes restarts and then shuts off again after a few seconds.

I usually try to drain it every half hour or so until it starts working again which is getting very frustrating. I have checked for clogs and obstructions 2 or 3 times now and still can't find anything that would be causing it to just stop like this. Keep in mind that it will ALWAYS start draining, it just stops after a few seconds.

My question is, if I replace the pump will this likely fix the problem, or could this be an issue with the electronics like the mode shifter or control board? Is intermittent pump failure in most washers with electric pumps a sign of a bad pump or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

probably a bad pump

the wet rotor synchronous motor pumps get noisy and erratic when the bearings become worn-you can take the pump out and apart to check it,or if you can get to it when washer operates, next time it fails to pump, hold a screwdriver blade nest to the laminated iron field of the pump-screwdrive will vibrate or buzz against field iron if pump is energized.I have had some weird control problems with late model washers caused by bad capacitors(my 2010 VMW cabrio was one)

The pump on my Asko did such things back in 2002.  Something had gotten past the coin trap and had interfered with the impeller...after that it would act up sporadically but became more frequent until I had to change it out.  Never a problem since.
