LG washing machines arriving damaged or faulty UK

Hi All,

A while back I purchased an 8KG LG washing machine from AO and it has what appeared to be 'pushed in' at the back. Me being OCD, I requested the machine to be swapped over. I ended up having another 3 machines delivered from the same retailer with various dents on the back. I got a refund from them. Its a total of 5 LG washing machines I received with dents on them and not from the same retailer.

I then purchased an equivalent 8kg model from Tesco, it was essentially the same model, just has a silver door trim and silver programme selector knob as opposed to the white one on the AO model. The machine arrived with dents in 3 places at the back of the machine, I decided to reject the machine and got a refund.

A colleague of mine at work purchased an 8kg model with Turbowash from John Lewis and I took delivery of one machine, there were no dents, however, it had a problem with the Turbowash spray not working and also, the little 'discharge pipe' by the front filter would not release any water. They had the machine swapped over and the second machine did not spray any water when the Turbowash was selected also. Very odd. I don't know what they are doing at this present time.

I wonder what is going on at the LG factory as I really thought LG had stringent quality control. The dents appear to be a boxing issue possibly, but the issue with the Turbowash not working, is clearly a poor Quality Control issue.

Has anyone else ever experienced issues with LG washing machines?

Why LG?

Curious about why you picked this brand rather than something more local. Special features?

And I don't blame you--I'd return those dented machines, too. Obviously the machine took a real bump/bang to make a dent that size. I wonder whether the cardboard box was struck, denting the machine, and then the cardboard rebounded. I've had appliances arrive with that.

What do you mean by local? I'm sorry I don't get what you mean by that? If you mean where its manufactured. The LG washing machine is made in Poland, a lot of appliances available for sale in the UK are made there, including my parents Serie 4 Bosch washing machine.

I like LG due to the features, build quality (if not damaged or arrives faulty) the Direct Drive Motor, 6 Motion wash action.

Maybe it has happened when they were loading them by forklift truck?

Faulty appliances from 'the off' is never a good start either. Everything should work perfectly. Unfortunately this is not always the case.

As an aside, decades ago my gran's old Hoovermatic Deluxe started to leak at the pump. When I disassembled it to have a look, I discovered that a spare rubber spin-lid buffer had found its way into the pump. It being rubber, it caused no damage. Both lid buffers were still present on the fascia/surround. I presumed it had fallen in during manufacture.

By local, I meant domestically manufactured. I really have no idea what is still made in Britain and what isn't.

If your nation leaves the EU, will this affect availability or prices of these foreign-built appliances?

I’m not aware of any UK company still making washing machines other than Wbac which is pretty niche at the moment.
White Knight Gas Dryers are still made there.

Hoover UK is gone since the 1990s
Hotpoint UK and Creda etc became part of Indesit which is now whirlpool and makes nothing in the UK anymore.

And all the other brands are ancient history.

The UK leaving the EU could have an impact on the cost of appliances but nobody can give you an answer on the specifics as negotiations are rumbling on and the position remains as clear as mud.

Also with the UK needing to renegotiate arrangements with non-EU countries (it won’t be allows to ride any EU deals while not being in the EU), there’s a fairly substantial risk of price increase.

Also £ has been slipping fairly badly against the Euro, US Dollar and other currencies which has already increased prices and has been feeding into inflation.

I think Hotpoint still makes dryers at the Yate factory near Bristol?

There hasn't been a UK-made washing machine for several years, not since the Italians took over Hotpoint and Hoover, immediately closing down their washing machine manufacturing (takeovers funded by EU loans and grants, I might add).

Ebac in County Durham (owned by a prominent Leave campaigner) is just starting up making washing machines, but they're at the lower end of the market - cheap-looking style, plastic outer tubs, priced from £330 to £530. I don't see the sense in this. I'd rather we went all-out as a Miele rival, top end, all-metal, robust suspension, priced from £700-odd up.

Hotpoint and indesit dryers were always made in yate factory in bristol
When candy took over hoover they were still making machines here in the Merthyr factory in wales for 10-15 years and when Indesit Company bought out hotpoint they were still being made in the kinmel park in wales for 5-6 years
Hoover and Hotpoint factories were in wales and the uk production for both hoover and hotpoint ceased in 2009
It’s actually a shame hoover and hotpoint aren’t what they used to be but I do like there modern stuff and the machines that Italian companies are making today
