But you're right Eugene it sounds a lot like Aldis, Since Aldis opened a grocery store 2 1/2 years ago here in Beltsville I've done 90% of my shopping there.

My dad spent his entire life in the grocery business he always said stores should be small carry only the private label and would offer the best price and quality that way. Aldie's is doing exactly that.

 

I can go to an Aldis store fill entire shopping cart be checked out and home and only a half an hour. This is really what grocery shopping should be, when you look at the success of Sears Roebuck and Company they only carried their own brand originally and they were very successful, bringing in national brands is always a big mistake.

 

You simply don't need a choice of 36 different sizes and brands of ketchup LOL.

I am so excited that Lidl is supposed to open stores in my area. I visited a couple Lidl stores when I was in Germany, and found them very similar is setup to ALDI Nord, ALDI Süd and Penny stores.
 
 

 

Lidl is my favorite while I'm in Barcelona. Prices are far better than Carrefour, Mercadona or Condis. And they carry FRESH milk, not that awful UHT milk that is so prevalent in Spain.

 

How odd they make the announcement in New York, yet NONE of the new stores are coming here.  I certainly hope they don't have that nasty habit Aldi has here of offering a product and then suddenly it vanishes for months.

Don't see where in Manahttan Lidl would find the sort of space they need or seem to desire. Even if they did such a space would likely cost them dear.

Still Trader Joe's (owned by Aldi IIRC) seems to be doing well and even expanding in Manhattan, so you never know.
 
 

 

I usually go the the Aldi stores in Brooklyn and Queens. Occasionally in New Jersey. I can't be bothered with Manhattan. Strangely the prices in New Jersey are higher than their NYC prices.

Lidl in the UK has 'specials' where they promote, say, Italian produce, then it disappears. And when it's done, it's done. Basically one pallet of this, and one pallet of that.

A month or so later it might be French produce. Or Spanish, etc. Pretty much the same set up as Easter displays, or the Christmas produce. Although the Christmas stuff generally seems to linger a little longer on the shelves - more of it, I think.

we have 2 Aldi's here within 5 mi of us, which are OK for some things, good prices sometimes, generally decent quality. We also have Trader Joe's in VT, the other brother's store, we like that better, nicer design, better selections. But here in NY we also have a Wegman's, which has totally spoiled us for any other supermarket. Year after year Wegman's is rated by CU the #1 grocer in the US:

They are known to treat their employees extremely well w/ benefits, pension, perqs, and that means even more to us than price, top products, service, &c. BUT they are stellar in those aspects as well, excepting price. Wegman's is very choosy as to where they locate, their philosophy is to open only 1 or 2 stores in large cites where others like Safeway or Piggly-Wiggly might have 20 stores. They are slowly expanding South, now below DC. Danny Wegman just announced retirement, but his daughter will take over. We consider ourselves fortunate to have one to patronize here in our smallish city in Central NY.
 
Trader Joe's, Aldi, etc... just don't get the mania. They are fine for certain things one supposes, but neither are totally complete supermarkets. If you are into their various private label offerings fair enough. But there are times when one needs more.

Personally would take a Whole Foods over Trader Joe's any day of the week. Have shopped at Wegmans in NJ and rather liked the stores, but their support of Trump family (at least their wine) did give pause.
 
Greenville,NC,Kinston,NC both of these close to me.The Greeville staore would be less than 10 min from my house.Will have to try them.The store has been being built for a little over a year.Right now a tarp is over their sign.The sore is just about finished.Aldi is on Memorial Drive-their store is LESS convenient.Hidden behind a restaurant.
