Lids open or closed

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

We prop the lid on our Maytag TL when done using it, the dryer door is closed because it is next one of our storage closets.

The dishwasher at the condo in Montreal is always closed.
The washer and dryer there are also closed because they are in an alcove off the dining area.
Now, down in Ogden the door to the GE combo washer is always slightly ajar to prevent mildew and smells; the Inglis washer top lid is also left open, but I keep the dryer door closed 'cause the drum light would stay on all the time!
The dishwasher in the kitchen centre is always pushed into place, but I don't lock down the lid until I run it. The 58 Mobile Maid (just seem to wind up using it once in a while) is kept with the lid slightly ajar to prevent mustiness.
The Kenmore and Maytag dishwashers in the basement are still shut tightly and covered - they were potentially in the way of work when we did the kitchen.

Hello, Boston Bobby-

Hope you're doing better than I am.

After pneumonia in February/March, and a brief time of something approaching normal life, I now have bronchitis! Back on the Augmentin 875, and bed rest.

For the first time in a long time, I am skipping Maundy Thursday, and possibly Easter services.

both...

When I used the Whirlpool Calypso(which is now in the shed) I had to keep the lid open because of the mold and odor issues. The other top loading machines I have, I keep the lid closed because they do not have mold and odor issues like the calypso. The Primus machine (now my daily runner), I keep the door slightly ajar and the soap lid open because of the same reason above. The Dryer door stays closed as the drum light would be on if it was not.

On our Affinity pair, the dryer door is closed and the washer door is not quite latched. It's a joke to pull out the dispenser drawer to allow it to dry. The fabric softener compartment is always full to the top with water after a wash cycle is completed. If the drawer is going to dry out, that means removing it completely and emptying it, then leaving it out to dry. Didn't have this issue with the Duet.

I keep both horizontal and vertical axis washing machine lids open while not in use.It keeps them smelling fresh and I leave my dryer door open for the same reason. My laundry has been well preserved and I always get comments about how fresh and clean I smell.Even after a hard day's work.I use Gain w/bleach(liquid) and the Gain liquid fabric softner.I also use the slash free Clorox chlorine bleach which gets whites real white and doesn't spill or splash as much as regular chlorine bleaches do.I also either use a timed dispenser or pour the bleach in (diluted)duing the final 6 minutes of the wash.

Front-loader door ajar.

Condenser drier, ajar (to preserve both seals on the door porthole and the condenser duct).

Dishwasher ajar, to allow door seals some elasticity, and it also seems to prevent a smelly dishwasher between washes.

I don't know if it is just me, but... I notice a mouldy smell when some people brush past me on the bus. Almost as if they have washed their clothes in mouldy water. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yep...

We have a guy that works on the same floor....always smells damp and musty....

I sometimes want to ask him if he washes in cold water with negligible detergent and if he dries his clothes in a cold dark room followed by folding them direct to his wardrobe which is undoubtedly in a room with no open window or curtains...

ronhic

It is absolutely horrible.

Yesterday, a woman was standing in front of me, in the bank, waiting to be served - boy, was she reekin' of mustyness!

I think it has to do with cool washes and liquid detergents. No wonder allergies and asthma are everywhere; mould and mildew can set off an attack.

Lids on the washers are open for a least a day after using them. When it is very humid in the summer, I keep them open unless the machine is in use.

Doors on the dryers are closed, except the Filtrator dryer door is left open slightly, all night after use.

Years ago in very cold climates and many dryers were in the kitchen, people made sure a dryer was closed to prevent heat loss from their home.

Washer & Dryer Lids/Doors

Our washers have the lids up of course! For reasons mentioned above, to prevent musty stale odors and mold. After washing it also gives a chance for the wash basket to dry out too.

The dryers have the doors closed - lights in the drums would never turn off, plus the venting to the outside (we have gas models) let the cold air in - (in the wintertime when outside temperatures get below 40 degrees). I always keep the trap doors on the vents outside clear of any lint build up.

I leave the door ajar, at least a few inches. Lets the drum dry out and prevents formation of mildew. I also wipe the gasket crease dry at the end of each washday.
