Little Weird-Ass Mobile Maid calling my name

Nothing GE made in the Sixties should surprise me any more. I swear they must have found OE spare parts in the Louisville factory from time to time and said, "hey, let's make a dishwasher outta this stuff and put it in some store out in the boonies. Somebody's going to buy it!"

 

...and here it is!! A BOL with the tres BOL detergent-chute Tom has expained to us before and yet the machine obviously sports a Power Shower. What intrigues me here is, because of the deep blue vinyl on the wire racks, this machine is post-1967 vintage but has a pre-1965 upper rack from the Pull-out days.

 

I need another dishwasher in my house like I need shingles, but I just have to have this. My excuse will be that it will make an ideal tools/utility washer and that I'll harvest some parts. Yeah, yeah.

And the old U-shaped upper rack makes loading the bed of nails lower rack a real PITA, to say nothing of the lower rack's reduced capacity compared to the rack in the bow tie impeller machines. You are right, it is a surplus parts machine.

I've seen these before but always thought it was something some home handyperson had cobbled together themselves.   Still, it's an interesting design, no??

It's true that the octagonal lower racks that went away with the bow-tie impellers paradoxically held many more plates, and held them much more securely, than did the later straight-line pin racks. According to the manuals of the later machines, the user was supposed to "dove-tail' large and small plates to achieve the rated capacity of these machines but that was an arrangement that  led to a lot of chipped dishes especially when compared to the triangular loops than not only kept dishes from touching each other during the vigorous spray, they kept the items to be washed at an optimum angle for cleaning and also kept them from wobbling. Where this system failed, was when people started washing stuff other than plates and used the machines to wash large bulky items like roasting pans and the like.

 

I will, as usual, use this machine for washing things like trash cans, tools, large cleaning brushes and toilet plungers. Removing that large "U" shaped rack is a hell of a lot easier than most others. All else fails, yes, a parts donor.

I had the same model from the original owners. It actually holds a ton of dishes. Don't forget the center opening can be loaded by putting glasses on the inside pegs directly above the tower. They washed extremely well, and roar while doing so. Don't underestimate the capacity. I just loaded the bottom rack first, with the top rack out of the machine, then rep;aced the rack, for the last few items. because of the power shower, the usual of dried yuck on the bottoms of glasses never stood a chance. I wish i still had mine. Ahhh memories.

Nice find, Ken.  That will make a perfect single-rack machine for large items and oddball wares.
