I have my Mother's early 1960's GE electric skillet. It has the first removeable temperature control that has stopped working and is not repairable. The control is brown with a matching brown cord.
Does anyone have one? Or does anyone have the complete skillet they'd sell? I'd like to use it and have also acquired the matching sauce pot. But alas, no controller.

I was asking about the same control a year or two ago-

 

Keep looking.  I found a control for my GE saucepan at a rummage sale.  It's not perfect, but it is more accurate (by about 3 degrees F) than the one that came with the saucepan.

 

 

I try not to think too much about what happened to GE housewares, because it makes me very sad.

I presume it's a different fit than that of a Faberware Fry Pan.  I have a generic aftermarket control that will fit Faberware.   If it would work for GE, let me know.  At least you'd be able to use the skillet until you find an original GE control.

 

Lawrence, can you advise since you have examples of both?
 
That particular GE control

 

and the Farberware control are not the least bit interchangeable, Ralph. (nice try, though!)  The actual probe part of the GE is of a smaller diameter and length.  Big name makers did not have interchangeable probes.  A Presto probe would not fit a GE or Westinghouse......or a Sunbeam.

 

 

The GE control in question is smallish, oddly shaped, and the dial is vertical-that is up and down, instead of horizontal-flat.  The first series of the GE control was brown, later series were black.

You won't believe it, but...

I was trolling through Ebay the other day and found the exact frypan with control for a buy now of $10.00. Needless to say it's on it's way to me!
As someone suggested, keep looking. I do have the dutch oven style pan and it sits in my laundry room looking so lonely and useless. I better go dust it!

A kind member sent me a later version

of the GE Dutch Skillet, and I use it a lot.  It is wonderful for pot roast and Swiss (smothered) steak, and very good for deep-ish frying.   I like it very much.

GE Frying Pan

If I read the post correctly and as I know Tom, I believe he was giving you a positive affirmation Greg, for telling us you found the pan and control you wanted. We all enjoy and look forward to your posts and frankly are enviously of all the information you have and the many vintage appliances you have owned and used. You are welcomed here warmly.
 
I did not realize these also came with a "teflon/non stick surface.  My mothers had the regular  aluminum surface.  These "Dutch skillets", came with instructions to add a specific amount of oil and popcorn and set the temp to 400F.  "When the indicator light goes out your popcorn is done"...  It seemed like a miracle to a ten year old in the pre-microwave era.  I have no idea what happened to it.  Thanks,  it brought back some nice memories.
