A few months ago someone started a thread about a house for sale in (I think) upstate NY. IIRC they were semi-kit home made of _______?_________. They were made in the late 40's and 50's. One picked a style of house and then picked options such as garage, basement, etc. The same idea as Levittown houses.

I think there was mention that a military base in a Mid-Atlantic state or Virginia had ordered a lot of them to be used for married service members stationed there.

They were made of steel and ??? I recall members saying that it would be difficult to hang anything on the walls and that the place would be hard to heat. I believe the linked wikipedia article mentioned that most subsequent owners added baseboard heat.

I'm pretty sure I made a post with a question/comment about the heating and added a wise-assed aside that thanks to aw.org I now had yet another topic to read/research.

Does any of this ring a bell? Could someone send me a link to this thread or give me search terms that'd allow me to find it? I've tried searching but am using the wrong terms. I tried checking "My Posts", but it apparently doesn't go back far enough.

Thanks,

Jim

well if you posted in it....go to the Super Searchalator...and type in just your name....every post you ever done will be listed, may take a few pages to go through, but everything is kept there...

I think they were talking about a Lustron home....or something like that....

type in a 'key' word, that you added, that would help to narrow it down as well.....maybe 'heat'

Jim, it sounds like you're describing the porcelain enamel-on-steel Lustron homes.    If you searchalate "Lustron" you should find a few threads on this subject.

SUCCESS!!!

Yes, it was indeed Lustron. Many thanks......

New thought: In the original thread Jerry said he'd visited local Lustron homes. May I take this to mean that there are Lustron homes near his house... that can be visited (presumably with advanced notice)? I wonder what's involved in arranging that.......

Thanks again,

Jim
