Hello All,
My girlfriend and I bought a home recently! It came with a Maytag Fabric-Matic Washer and Dryer set. We were also just given a newer free GE washer and dryer set which is more modern.

From talking with a lot of different people we kept hearing to keep the older Maytag "they won't break!" people kept saying.

We stumbled upon this website while trying to research a bit more... We are not collectors and do not know much about the appliance world (current or vintage). However were inspired by this website and thought someone out there might guide us in what to do.... Should we keep the old ones or use the new ones? We use these washer and dryer often, living in a household with 4 humans and a dog.

Should we keep the old ones

I wouldn't trade vintage Maytags for a late model GE set, free or not.

GE hasn't built a decent washer since they discontinued the Filter-Flo 20 years ago.

Just keep in mind; Don't overload the washer (dry loosely places items up to the top row of holes), use good size doses of quality detergent and no cold washes. Liquid bleach now and then.

Keep the Maytags!

Sell the GE‘s for a profit. Save the maytags they will provide you many many years of trouble free service and in the event they do need maintenance parts are readily available and cheap.

Can you keep both?

Are you in a situation where you can store the newer set (perhaps in the basement or somewhere) and hold on to them in the event you need them down the road? Most folks here love their older Maytags but they can fail and if they do you could swap out the newer set and use those while you are deciding what to do with the Maytags. You may want to learn how to work on them but vintage appliances do sometimes require extra attention.
