My washer started with a loud, rubbing sound when it was washing/agitating the clothes. I noticed the agitator moved about a ¼ in each direction. Same with the tub. The tub spins as normal and drains when it gets to the spin cycle.

I have videos if anyone thinks that might help.

Thanks,
Dee

If there's no Upload Video option below your post composition window then you'd need to upgrade to a paid membership to get that option. An alternative that many board users choose is place your video(s) on YouTube (or other file sharing service) and link to them in your posts/replies.

Awww! Thank you for the suggestion. That's a great way. I'll do that.

Most likely candidates are worn damper pads or a tub bearing on its way out. It could be many things and difficult to pin down without a video.

Ok, here you go!

Washer in spin cycle...

Thank you!

Watching that video, that machine sounds horrible.
Hopefully someone here has a clue about what is wrong.
Transmission or bearing issues?
Possibly a stripped gear. - which would require transmission service or replacement.

Oh wait, I read it wrong and thought spin was the problem. That's an interesting sound, it sounds like the transmission/agitator shaft is the culprit. Try removing the agitator (there's a 1/4" screw on the side of the agitator barrel near the bottom that needs removal and pull the agitator straight up off the shaft) and see if there's any lateral play in the metal agitator shaft.

Ok! I already pulled off the agitator, but didn't think to check the agitator barrel for play.

The agitator appears to be moving, seen briefly at the moment of opening the lid, but a video with the lid switch bypassed/tricked so it can be seen for a longer time would help the experts diagnose the problem. Also a view when spin revs up. Open the lid and place half of a wooden clothespin or other such suitable object into the gap behind it to depress the switch actuator.
