Down to my *last* several sachets of Wisk tablets and now am a woman on a misson to find more. Have hunted high and low, every dollar, off price, surplus to requirement type store these years and nothing.

Now I *know* one of you peeps (as the children say), have some so fess up! *LOL*

If interested have some Ecolab detergent to swap.

Wisk tablets actually cleaned and worked very well in front loaders. Would mash up the sachet and decant the contents into a mason jar. One or two tablespoons handled the most grossly soiled loads.

The first version (in the red box) contained perborate bleach and a bleaching activator which gave Persil a run for it's money I'm here to tell you. While that particular version was not labeled "HE" machine safe, used it anyway. Contacted Lever Bros to tell them how happy I was with Wisk tablets in my front loader, and the customer service person told me though the product was not labeled "HE" it was tested for use in such machines. Lever Bros even sent me several coupons for "free" boxes of Wisk tablets. Needless to say stocked up every time saw a store putting them on closeout.

Because of the last bit, never bothered buying more when I saw a local discount/overstock store had Wisk tablets in stock. By the time I heard the product was discontinued and ran back to said store, they were totally out of stock. The owner even said "you know, for months I couldn't give that detergent away, now that I cannot get anymore everyone is asking for it".

With my new soild door Miele, it is more important than ever to use detergents that are low sudsing/easy rinsing. Since I cannot see what is going on in there, it seems prudent to start using "HE" detergents. Be this as it may, refuse to pay the highway robbery prices one pays in the United States for Persil.

My current favourite detergents, Cheer Free and Tide CW powder do work well, but one has to really watch the dosage to prevent over sudsing. Still, will use Cheer Free for darks and linens as it cleans well with no scent, while preserving colours. Both detergents seem fine with shirts and regular laundry, it is the very absorbent/froth making items like terry cloth towels and such which cause problems.

so laundress, can you recommend a low-sudsing, low/non brightener detergent still on the market? that still cleans well? thanks

Sadly have not found one, which is why one uses Cheer Free and Gentle powder. Not "low sudsing" per se, but again have no problems when laundering linens and clothing, just have to watch dosage. YMMV, however so cannot make this a blanket statement.

According to CR's last testing several detergents besides Cheer came in as "poor" for brightening, which indicates low to nonexistant levels of OBAs. IIRC EcoAdvantage "HE"detergent sold by Asko and it's dealers is "dye free", but do not know if that means OBA free as well. Nor can I comment on it's cleaning performance, it may just be the same product as Sears's "HE" "free" detergent.

EcoVantage Powder

I've used the Ecovantage powder. It does contain OBA's, percarbonate bleach and is completely fragrance free(not even a chemical smell). There are no suds in the wash, even at "heavily soiled" dosage levels. I quite liked the performance. IMHO, it performs similarly to Persil and is much, much cheaper. About $30 for a 120 load pail.

Launderess -

Have you tried UK Persil tablets? Sometimes British Superstore will have them on sale (Buy One Get One Free), and I've found they work great. They can be a bit costly to ship, but I use so little that it it works out okay. Just a thought.

If you guys can get British Persil in the US, where can I get Cold Water Tide in the UK? I have tried everywhere. BTW, do they do a low suds version of cold water Tide for FL's

Hoovermatic -

I have to order my British Persil from BritSuperStore. I don't know of a US Web site that will ship detergent to the UK, but if you want me to send you a box of Tide CW, just email me and I will be happy to send you some.

They don't have a "low-sudsing" version for FL's, but we just cut down the dose and it works quite well. Just a couple of TBSP (you may need more for your hard-water). I sent some Tide and Cheer to a friend in the UK and he seems to be getting along with it quite well (even though it is non-HE).

Pete,

I have used bio & non bio Persil tabs both pre-and post "splat", and the formulation for these tablets haven't changed - they've remained the same for years, especially the non bio ones which have remained with the original tablet formulation IIRC. The bio tabs had added fizzing action introduced a few years ago, but the pre-and-post splat formulas for both of these are the same. Only the colourcare tabs, and the powders were reformulated after the "splat" appeared on the packets.

I too have searched everywhere for stashes of the Wisk Tabs and for the Surf Tabs. No luck - never saw them in the dollar stores. However, the last time I saw the Surf Tabs was in KMart probably 2 years ago. Whole tableful of boxes marked Clearance. But being me, the clearance price was only about $.50 off the regular price and I waited. Went back every week for a month. Boxes didn't move nor were they reduced further. Finally, the one Saturday I missed, they were reduced again. So when I went on Sunday, of course none were left - found out they were reduced to $1.99 per box. Ouch!!

Eco-Vantage detergent

Pretty certain this product is similar to Sears Ultra Plus w/Oxiclean, made by the same detergent maker.
