Hi everybody! Hope you’re all well. A few weeks ago, I was fixing a run of the mill modern Whirlpool washer for one of my dad’s coworkers, and his wife asked me for a recommendation on a stacked washer and dryer for a weekend home that they are renovating, so of course, I said Speed Queen, and asked what they currently had, thinking that they could probably be fixed. She responded with something along the lines of that they were old and outdated, and needed to go. Of course, I asked how old, mentioning that I’d be happy to take them away for them if they weren’t wanted. She then told me that the dryer was definitely vintage, that the wasn’t sure about the washer, and that I was welcome to them when they start the renovation this spring. Fast forward to today, when she very kindly sent me pictures of them. The washer was unfortunately a modern VMW, but the dryer is absolutely amazing. It is a 1971 Kenmore 70 series, and appears to be a rare bird. Despite being a standard capacity model without many options, it has a backlit control panel, a drum light, and soft heat. It only showed up in the Fall Winter 1971 Sears catalog, so I’m thinking that it wasn’t made for very long. I’ve seen a bunch of KM’s from this time period that look similar, but I don’t think I’ve seen this exact model before. I may have to sell off my Sub Zero 550 to make room, but this one is definitely getting saved for the collection.
