This is good news indeed. Lets see if there will be a mass-exodus from the US forces as a result of overturning DADT. All those poor, nervous heterosexuals who are going to be at the mercy of out and proud homosexuals checking them out in the showers and sneaking into their bunks at night to have their way with them.

Should I contemplate a military career I wonder? Do they still discriminate against people with flat feet?

Some serious food for thought here.

A bit premature, actually

This won't happen "soon", if at all.

First it can take only one filibustering Senator to stop the whole legislative process. And if it passes both houses of congress and becomes signed into law, then it's a compromise that leaves it up to the Defense Dept. to decide how and when the repeal of the policy will take place. And that only starts after December of this year, after a review of the impact on the military is completed.

So, yeah, someday gays might be able to admit their preferences and not be frog-marched out of the service. But not this year, and maybe not for several more years.

Still, it's progress, and major progress for the USA.

With the young age of most soldiers, and the the new generation's laissez-faire attitude about the fluidity of sexualty and preferences, I'd say THEY think....... "WHO REALLY CARES?"

But at least the will know where to turn if they need the chrome PROPERLY sucked off their trailer-hitch. Nothing like a good tow-job.
 
Should this legislation

actually come to be law and should the president, secretary of defense and head of the joint chiefs of staff agree to it then all that will happen is a return to the status quo anti 1993.

Gays may still be discriminated against in the military, indeed, the decision may be made by any E7 or higher that there will be no gays under their command.

It's a nice gesture towards us, designed to keep us voting for them in November. Unless, of course, ENDA is passed and signed. Only then will this have teeth.

Not bloody likely.

We remain second class citizens and sub-human. 1992 was still a very bad time for us.
"Out with the old, and in with the older" as they say...

This should have been done back in 1980s

when I was in the Navy. Looking at the big picture, The Armed Forces is not seeking out potential men and women (who happen to be gay) who have education, advanced degrees and skills necessary to benefit our military. Think of the many doctors, nurses, and lawyers out there who just want to serve. I don't think it will matter much to the "straight" soldiers, airman, sailors now serving. When I was in the military, everyone knew who was gay or queer as we were called and much wasn't really said unless someone was actually caught in an act.
