I know that all washing machines hum a little bit, while they are filling with water, but I'm noticing something strange about my GE toploader.

In the past 2 weeks, when I press the Start button for it to start filling, that sucker will hum like a 50,000 watt Electricity Station. It makes me think of a barber's electric hair clipper thingy that they use to give you a haircut with.

It gets loud for a few minutes, then quiets down, then gets really loud again, then gets quiet again. It never used to do that, and the washer is less than 3 years old.

The washer is Model WARE5260D1WW if that helps anybody, and I will post pics of it.

Is something getting to go out of it by humming/buzzing really loud like that while filling with water? It does it with all water temperatures, and does it on both Wash and Rinse.

Any info would be appreciated!

I've seen some machines do that when the hose filters are clogged. Mostly happens on the hot side with a lot of build up. Easy thing to check out.

buzzing inlet valve

i also have had inlet valves buzz with plugged screens or low water pressure.
Could be something wrong with the valve too.

My G.E. Harmony does it also..Its like a buzzing/ squealing sound they told me it was normal and sense that washer looks like it fills like mine does. The biggest no no from what he told me is to shake/or mess with  the pipes cause of mineral build up. I am just guessing though my Harmony is made by L.G.

have you tried moving your temp switch from hot, to warm, to cold, to see if the noise stops or changes, this way you will at least know possibly which solenoid is causing the hum....

Yeah, it hums like that on all water temperatures, cold, hot, warm. And it also hums on both fills, for wash, and for the rinse.

I'll have to check the hoses and make sure they are not clogged. Probably a valve going out of it, it's a 2 year old machine, and it's about time for it to start falling apart.

Also.......

In the first 6 months I had this washer, it pumped water out all over the floor, twice in less than a month. Naturally, it was on a Super sized load, both times. Water was behind the washer, under it, in front on it, behind the dryer, in front of the dryer and basically all over the laundry room floor.

I had to pull both units out, and spend the next 3 hours sopping up water. Just what I wanted to do on a late afternoon.

Turns out that it was a small hose that senses the water level in the tub. It was plugged up with fabric softener sludge and throwing off the sensor. Just a tiny bit of fabric softener sludge caused a 2 to 4 hour mess. And I dilute the softener well, with water. Downy's thick stuff.

Humming GE washing machine videos

Somebody requested a video of my GE washing machine humming, while it was filling. I have uploaded 2.

This time, the hum stopped when I switched over from cold, to hot. I'll take off the cold fill hose and check it out. Anyways, here are the links to my vids.

PS-Sorry for the blurry quality of the videos, my cam isn't that great with making videos.

Other Vid

It's the cold side humming the loudest, but warm has hummed loudly, too, in the past. Like I said, it comes and goes.
