books.google.com is in the process of adding scads of magazines, ads and all, including LIFE.

After you enter s search term, say, "norelco cassette", change the "Showing:" dropdown on the first result page to "Full view only". Click on a magazine cover you're there. I used the Page Info tool in Firefox to isolate this image:

And, yes, you can find appliance ads.

Oh, Joe...

while you're at it, how did you extract the images from the site? I assume it has to do with "the Page Info tool in Firefox to isolate this image", but that might as well be Greek to me. What's Firefox and how do I do it? I already found several neat ads I've never seen before!

If you're not using Firefox, download it from getfirefox.com.

Once you find an ad you want to save, zoom all the way in on it. Wait a few seconds for it to sharpen. The maximum size is limited by your monitor, so do this at your monitor's highest resolution setting.

Right-click on the image and select View Page Info. Click the Media button, then highlight the first item on the list below. Use the cursor-down key to find the image, click the Save As. . . button and save the image with the .jpg extension.

Voila! Ready to turn into wallpaper or, if you have a monitor capable of really high resolution, to send to a printer to make a poster. :)
