Some of my vintage Magnalite aluminum cookware displays normal annodization from use but also has stains and/or somewhat rough interior surface areas that I'd like to correct.  The roughness may have been caused by letting pans soak, which I did with one pan after a recent use and have since found out isn't advised, and which created small white bumps that seemed like calcium formations.  The bumps washed off easily when I cleaned the pan, but I think they may have left some roughness behind.  An online search produced a few hits that provided advice along the lines of "you can try a paste of lemon juice and baking soda," which doesn't  exactly sound like there's much confidence behind that method.

I know about cream of tartar, but am not so sure that would resolve the roughness issue.   Would Bon Ami or BKF applied with a green scrub pad be safe?  The stains around the sides don't show up well in the picture, but they're brownish and presumably food-based.  Any suggestions are welcome.

I’d use BKF with a scrubbing sponge, the new kind with scrubbing “dots”.  They don’t scratch, cheese and egg rinses right out of them and you can throw them in the washer to keep them nice and clean.  They really are the best dish washing and pan scrubbing helper I’ve come across in years.

The ones I’ve bought I purchased at Target and they are purple, not white like the ones in the link, but they are the same otherwise.  They work especially well with BKF and polish my Farberware SS pots and pans beautifully, getting even difficult stuck food off completely with little elbow grease.  And they don’t scratch like the green Scotch Brite pads sometimes do.

The second link I posted is of the ones I use.

Brillo Pads

I use Brillo Pads on my aluminum cookware/bakeware, and it keeps it shiny, and very useable. you do have to put some effort in to it, but worthwhile. I also like Brillo better than SOS, as they resist rusting better, and the soap seems to last longer. They also seem to be more reasonable price wise. That's my 2 cents worth, for whatever its worth!

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

Eddie, my FWB loves his Dobies, but I don't know if he's aware of the type with two different sides.   I'll share that link with him.
