Check out those fins! On a vacuum cleaner!

I've seen only one of these before, at a sale about a year ago. I didn't get it and Terry shook his finger at me ;-) so when saw this at a thrift store Monday, I was honor bound to bring it home. It is so unique, those fins and rear bumper just crack me up!

I found a couple of more modern uprights as well that I'll use for work, a Sanitaire (navy & chrome w/light and handle switch, wide rear wheels) and a Eureka (early 80's - brown hood, white handle, cord & cloth bag) but the other fun vintage find was this Westinghouse hand vac. It's nearly mint and was clogged tight with hair. I cleaned it up and it seems to have been used very little.

NICE

Those sure are great vacs. How does the Atlas work? Is it powerful and quiet? I like the Lux also. Man, what great finds! I wish our thrift store was full of treasures like that. How much did you have to shell out for them? Tim

That Atlas is one cool looking vacuum. Love that paint job!!!

That atlas looks very similar in design to the Tri-star / Compact vacuums. In the tristar, the dirt goes into sort of a paper lined "bucket" instead of a bag. It works the same as a bag in a canister vacuum, except for the fact that the whole top half is open. When it fills up, you lift the round lid, and you take the dirt-filled paper liner out to dispose of it. Tri-stars also have a secondary filter right on the front of the motor, which sits right behind the dirt bucket.

That Atlas is a beauty and the color is too. I've never heard of them before. It does look sort of "Compact" like doesn't it. Jeff..who/when and where were they made?

The Elux upright looks a bit different than I remember them having the same footprint but the body section was square not rounded like that one?

Atlas Vacuum

I could be mistaken, but I believe that the Atlas Vacuum is a rebranded Universal machine. They did a number of them. I had a green Universal Jet 99 that was almost identical to the Atlas sans the tail fins. Interesting machines, but not great performers. From the late 50s, early 60s.

That's interesting on the Atlas origins. I just can't get over the fins! Skyler, the car lover of the family, walked by it yesterday and stopped dead in his tracks when he spied those fins on the back. "It looks like a car!!"

I am building a "collection" of vacuums, much to my dismay. I have so little room for anything more!

Greg, Thanks for posting the neat pictures. I am so glad that you didn't let this Atlas get away from you. What a beautiful machine. It looks to be in mint condition as does the Electrolux and that cute little Westinghouse. Those fins on the Atlas are just to cool. Terry
