Is there any finer spread for toast than a dose of that treacley brown goo? Ok so Tiptree jam wins most times with me, but I have to say I love Marmite. Its a winner! How about you guys? Nick. P.S one of my favourite snacks especially after a night down the local is Dairylea and marmite on white bread. Any other crazy snacks you guys like?

Love It…

… but I’m supposed to eat yeast because I have a slight intolerance to it (and I also end up with oral thrush because of it).

Yum! I love it! :) I always remember Mum making me Marmite on toast when I was little. :)

It’s an acquired taste, I know.

I’m intrigued to see what Mr Jon says about Marmite…. He’s either going to say he loves it… or that he hates it as much as an Indesit washing machine. LOL

Seeing as I say I like it, I’ll probably get some ‘abuse’ later on MSN (hehe) if he does not like it!

“*Not* supposed to eat yeast”! I cannot eat yeast!

I have done it again!

Damn grammar! LOL

Marmite in the states

I first tasted Marmite while visiting England.

I get my supply in Canada.

I find most people in the states will not try it if you tell them what it is . . . . however, if you sneak it on the snack tray they enjoy it

I enjoy it - on warm toast it is "nursery food" at it's finest!

FEH!

I just can't seem to get past the "look" of Marmite. It just looks black and sticky and conjures all kinds of nasty images.

The funniest thing I ever saw was Mr. Bean trying to entertain New Year's Eve guests. He only had one stick pretzel that he dipped in Marmite. Still needing to fill the appetizer platter, he cut off a few twigs from a tree and subsequently dipped them in Marmite! Of course you know that Mr. Bean got the pretzel!

Maybe I'll be brave enough to try it...one day.

Oh Venus

Its delicious, my Ozzie cousin drops by just when I am running out every few years and there is always some in the fridge!! The trick for us yanks is to spread it very very thin almost like its not there.
I think I prefer vegemite but my cousins prefer marmite.

When I am running low in the summer I can swipe it out of Al's ears!!

I tried Vegemite for the first time last year and didn't care for it. T'wasn't horrible but it's an acquired taste I think, like salty licorice. I believe Kraft makes Vegemite and I was reading they are discontinuing it in Canada, for no sales no doubt LOL. Mom and I bought a jar of Nutella the other day, another thing you always see on the shelves and wonder "does anyone buy this stuff". Haven't opened the jar yet. But it appears from the label that sugar is the top ingredient, followed by peanut oil, then hazelnuts cocoa and skim milk powder.. Funny how on their tv commercials they say how it's nutritious and contains hazelnuts, skim milk and a hint of cocoa,, no mention whatsoever about it being nearly all sugar. LOL

Oh, my word, Pete

If you like peanut butter, you will probably LOVE Nutella.

Some of my favourite ways of enjoying Nutella:

On apple slices.

On graham crackers.

On toast.

On toasted croissants.

On toasted poundcake.

On pretzels

On Ritz crackers.

On a spoon.

On my fingers............

Get the concept?

As for Marmite, it's not bad, but if there's peanut butter, butter, or Robertson's Ginger Marmelade.....

Marmite

First time, I ate Marmite was at a friends home in Germany (he is British and working with Lufthansa in Frankfurt). He told me I should try it and nobody but real Brits would love it; generations of youngsters had been brought up with it, I was told. I tried it - and....LOVED IT!!! Am I probably British now??? Maybe that's the reason why I love to be in the UK so often??? lol
There's a similar stuff in Germany, available in health-food stores, called VITAM-R. My mother used to buy it quite often when we were children because my sister and I loved the taste!
VITAM-R is a bit less strong in taste and less dark in colour than MARMITE. I use MARMITE quite often for cooking, too. As I try to avoid synthetical glutamate wherever possible, I use organic vegetable-stock cubes and Marmite instead. Not that I'm a vegetarian - I love meat! But don't want to end up like my mother: she has chinese-restaurant-syndrome meanwhile - after ages of use of stock-cubes and other industrial products, containing lots of glutamate! And all our friends want to know the trick I use to get the yummy taste into the dishes....smile! Usually I buy Marmite each time we visit our friends in the UK as it is difficult to get here.
And when it comes to these fine marmalades and jams....mmmm....I'm happy to get them in our next-door super-market here in Leverkusen!!
Also my mum provides the whole family with self-made fine jams, marmalades and jellies like pumpkin-apple-carrots with sherry or orange-peach with whiskey and cinnamom and others...lovely!!!

YUK!!!

I hate Marmite,Vegemite,and Promite.
The smell of them make me queasy and just are too strong for my tastebuds.
They also have a lot of salt in them too.
P.S. I hope the other Aussie contingent on here don't lambast me for hating vegemite as it is an Aussie icon.
L.O.L. L.O.L. L.O.L.
Cheers.

i think Maytagbear is on to something

why did God give us 10 fingers? 1 for Marmite 1 for Nutella 1 for Tiptree Tiny tip raspberry, another for their wonderful plum jam, 1 for Persil colour Liquigel . . . . . . . . . LOL.

Not before a date

I love marmite but can't stand the smell of it on someones breath. Not one for a good snog me thinks LOL!!

Nutella!!

I purchased a jar of Nutella, for the first time, a while back. It's like liquid hazelnut/chocolate candy. How on earth this stuff can be good for you is beyond me!

Lawrence: your two suggestions about the spoon and fingers hit home with me. I have been known to sneak in the pantry, spoon in hand, and snatch a taste! I noticed on the jar that it said the stuff is good on croissants. Talk about clogged arteries! Since I'm going grocery shopping today, I will pick up some butter-laden croissants and try to kill my family with that lethal combination!! LOL I have also been thinking about spreading some Nutella between cake layers, although your apple slice idea sounds a lot healthier!

Good eating folks!

Retromom,

You can find Marmite in Houston at the British Market in the West U Village. They also stock Vegimite. It's a great shop for all things British. We use Marmite on occasion with a Sunday morning tea. You know wading thru the tea while reading the Sunday paper.

I first tried Nutella maybe 6 years ago. I thought it was a European product, at least the lable looks similar to s Euopean product. We love it with Biscotti with our morning coffee.

Nutella is amazing..I spread it on saltine crackers and toast!

There is also a "Milky Way" spread that tastes nothing like Milky Way bars.
