mattress topper question

Around Christmas time, or a bit before, I bought a ball fibre polyester filled mattress topper. (pillow top.) It is on our latex mattress which is over 10 years old now but still in excellent condition. I now have psoriatic arthritis which makes my tendons and joints a bit sensitive and I thought a bit more cushioning on the mattress might take the pressure off my shoulders and hips in particular.

The mattress topper seems to be quite comfortable but it already has deep ruts where my partner and I lie. The polyester fill doesn't seem resilient, the top pad is divided into squares and the filling pushes to one side in each square that takes any weight. So there are two long valleys in the mattress topper, it has accentuated the very slight sinking of the latex mattress when I had thought it would help level things out.

My questions are - Is this what I should normally expect from a polyester fill mattress topper? Or is it an indication of poor quality?

Are there any tricks to fluffing it back up? I have tried hanging it in the sun but that achieved nothing. It hasn't been laundered yet so it is not damaged by poor washing technique. The care label says it is machine washable. Is washing likely to make it better or worse?

I phoned the importer and they were useless, just said to return it to place of purchase for them to inspect it. The retailer is happy to take it back but I don't want to be an idiot and take it back if there is a simple way to fluff it back up.

I have never used a mattress topper before so I don't know what I should reasonably expect.

Good question because

Last fall I bought a new memory foam / hybrid mattress, the firmest one I could find, a Kingsdown hybrid. Along with it I also bought a similar topper just in case but the stitching is from left to right, more undulated waves than squares. I noticed after about a couple of months it might be flattening out and tried shoving it in the dryer to give it a tumble but our dryers too small hence it can't even tumble, just circle around. I'm waiting on taking it over to my sister, she has one of those big new Maytag dryers. Or else take it to a coin-op and use one of theirs.

If your mattress topper will fit in your dryer try tumbling it for about 20-30 mins with some dryer balls or tennis balls. For an item this large you would want to use 5 or 6 balls. This may fluff it up again. Using balls like this will also help dry loads more evenly and quickly.

I've never seen a mattress topper like that. It looks more like a duvet but thicker. Most mattress toppers I've seen are filled with latex or memory foam.

Chris, I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention and didn't notice that you'd posted a link with a picture of your mattress topper. We have one that's almost exactly like this one, a Cal King size for about 15 years now. I've washed it repeatedly and it fluffs right up after washing and drying. I suggest that you give this a try and you should be happy with th results. Also, try using the dryer balls like I suggested before, they really help to fluff up pillows, comforters and the like and also makes for faster and more even drying.

I don't own a dryer but the caravan park up the road has a big Speed Queen commercial one, I have repaired it a couple of times so I will ask if I can use it to fluff up the mattress topper.

Also the store phoned me back today and said to bring it in, they will inspect it and if it looks faulty they offered to upgrade to a better one. The current one has 500 grams of polyester per square metre (gsm), they have another with 1000 gsm on special for only a little more than I paid so I will probably upgrade to that if they say mine is faulty.
