You're all way beyond me but I'm happy to announce that I just, FINALLY, got the agitator off/out of my Maytag A207. After many tries and a wrenched back, I filled the center column of the agitator with a dish towel, surrounded the base with towels and filled the center, slowly, with boiling water.
Slow eureka, it worked (with much tugging). Glad I didn't have to buy the inflatable thing and the slide hammer didn't work.
Now 2 questions for you Maytag experts:
1. There was some kind of wire/rubber ring at the base that distintigrated as I removed the agitator. What was it?
2. I need to grind much of the corrosion off of the drive shaft, what do I then re-grease the thing with --white lithium?
Oy, I'm such a newbie here. Any advice welcome.

There is a small rubber O ring looking thing, that goes on the end of the transmission shaft. I think it's called a locking ring, and that's what holds the agitator on the shaft.
I don't know that I would put any grease on the end of the shaft.
