I had one of this vintage rebadged as Jenn-air. It was hands down the very BEST dishwasher I EVER owned. I could not only fit the most massive loads of pots, pans and dishes in it with not room for another spoon, it cleaned everything spotlessly! It was not as quiet as the dishwashers of today, but who cares? It would out perform ANYTHING I have ever used. I had replaced my rapid advance timer reverse rack Maytag that had been the best one I had up to that point with this machine. The reverse rack Maytag had replaced a new Kitchenaid dishwasher I foolishly bought in 1980 and kept only a year. It was the worst dishwasher I ever had, left little particles all over the upper rack dishes and took forever to do a load of dishes. Goes to show that not everyone thinks Kitchenaid is all that and a bag of chips.........

It sounds like your KA was the dreaded 19 series that heated the final rinse water and tried to flash dry the dishes without the heated dry. It didn't work.

My mother has the MOL version of this dishwasher. It has the touchpad controls, but no digital readout, just LEDs. It has the most convenient, and flexible, racks I've ever used. It's capacity is huge and everything comes out sparkling all the time. I think you could almost fill it with cement, run the cycle, and all would be gone.

KA 19 Series DWs

Actually dried much better than the KD-18s and KDS-20s and the better 21 series. The 19s had a MUCH larger fan and moved much air than the models with the separate air heater.

Of course I am assuming that you are using the Energy Saver dry setting on the 18, 20 and 21 machines.

I had my KDSS-20 for almost ten years and it did a miserable job drying, but I only ever used it on ESD just as I do on my 28 YO WP DW which does a beautiful job drying the dishes.

Thank you for the video. I think a far better demo of the wash action from the tower under the upper rack would be achieved by blocking the lower rack with pots, pans and bowls, then see how well the water distribution from the tower works.

 

I have a Maytag DWC4910AAW, the series before this one. It has the pop-up tower and was the first series after the reverse rack machines. It cleans very well what I can load into it. In the operating instructions, there is not one picture of a pot, pan or bowl in the loading instructions. They show cookie sheets racked along the sides of the lower rack and mention "pans" once in the loading instructions for the upper rack. They show the upper rack filled with plates and cereal bowls and one picture of it filled with glasses, but the whole thing looks like they had not quite thought out the switch from the reverse rack loading. The WP-made Power Clean model with the full width wash arm under the upper rack is a far better solution for loading what I wash, just like the full width wash arm under the upper rack in my modified KDS 18s.

Hi Sparky, I actually think they were over sold, we saw thousands of them in this area, MTs DW sales nearly doubled after they got rid of the Hated RR rack design [ hated by the general public that is ] But the interesting thing I found about the JC models is nearly every customer I encountered with then was not that pleased. I was always talking them up to the customer, telling them they should not replace them etc.

Just last week I was working for one of our customers with a mint 1997 MT JC DW and she couldn't wait to get rid of it, she complained that it did not hold much and that the dishes never really got that clean especially compared to her sisters newer KD DW.

That's so strange Combo....I've heard quite the opposite over the years; MT JCs were some of the best performing dishwashers.

I wonder if it's geography based, in your sphere, with water conditions/culture, etc.
