Maytag 806 Craigslist purchase from Kansas City

Beginnings of restoration

Label - Why does model number say AA806? I thought Avocados were supposed to say VA806.

-If I'm correct, serial number indicates manufacturing date as, Dec., 1979.

Agitator came off easily and made a popping sound when it released.

This I couldn't believe. Mounting stem appears to be the old style, but looks like it was installed yesterday.

Two of these legs were rusted badly - one nut was frozen so I cut it off.

Damper pads seemed to be in good shape. They soaked up a lot of Poly-lube.

Pulley, bearing, brake package, and drive lug all seemed to be in good shape.

Water valve soaked in vinegar.

Injector cleaned and reassembled.

New rubber feet for legs.

Motor being spiffed up.

Damper, radial bearing, splined shaft for brake, and helix all in good shape.

Outer tub drain a bit rusted. Gave it a light coat of JB Weld, inside and out, with my little finger.

After removing all the rust I could with a rotary steal brush, I gave the base a coat of rust proofing paint.

Repainted base and started to reassemble.

Close-up of base. There were no oil or water leaks so tub seal and transmission service were not needed.

Took out this screw plug and gave the pump two or three generous squirts of turbine oil. Pump started turning like new.

Almost completed. Replaced tub to pump hose and pump to drain hose.

This washer had the older style tub bearing and I was able to inject 6cc of turbine oil into it using a syringe and large needle for smooth operation.

I put a zip tie on the hose that attaches to the bleach dispenser cup to keep it from coming off again. I adjusted the spacing of tub cover and inner basket with two heavy plastic coat hangers. This also created the proper clearance between the top cover and tub cover.
