Maytag 806 Dryer Not Heating

Hey There!

My Maytag 806 Dryer Still turns on and runs-but it doesn't heat anymore. I've checked the breaker and the outlet and both of those are fine/putting out enough power. Any common offenders that should be easy to address? I don't want to replace my dryer!

Also, as a point of curiosity since I'm about to open it up...does this model have timed cycles or no? As of now we've been setting a timer and turning off the dryer manually. Not sure if maybe there's an additional repair that could be done there or if it just doesn't have a timer.

You’ll have to look into the thermostats along with the heating element. I am willing to bet it’s the high limit thermostat, will need to replace it with a Supco L180-20 thermostat, can be a little tricky to find it’s close to the L170-10 thermostats they originally came with. Reason why the high limit thermostat cuts out at a much lower temperature on those dryers is the heating element is just inches away from the front of the drum hence why it cuts out at 170F vs the typical high limit thermostat ps that will cut out at 200+ degrees.

Should it be visible if it's burnt out/needs replacing? Or will I need to borrow a voltometer from someone?

Non-heating DE806 dryer

A bad heating element is the most common problem but there’s nearly a dozen other things that could cause it not to heat as well.

 

First be sure you have 240 V at the outlet, then check for 240 V at the terminal block also check for burned wire connections.

 

After that you have to really start opening the dryer up, take the cover off the control panel check the program switch that could have burn connections or be bad. After that I would check the thermostats make sure they’re both have continuity there is a cool down thermostat that does not have continuity until it’s hot check the thermostats with the large thick wires.

 

It could also be a bad motor switch even though the motor runs fine.

 

The dryer not shutting off properly is a whole different problem, the electronic control system used on these dryers was problematic even when they were new and they don’t get any better overtime. But it is fixable if you want to put enough effort in it and try to track down parts that are no longer available on eBay etc.

 

Let us know if you have any questions once you get into it, to get to the heating element you remove the entire cabinet of the dryer by removing the screws around the base taking the back panel off first and disconnecting all the wires going to the thermostats motor etc.
