Maytag 806 Squeals During Spin

I've replaced the belts, springs, glides lubed the glide rails, and it still squeals during the spin, but stops once all the water is pumped out, and reaches full spin speed.

Any ideas what to check next?

Are you using genuine Maytag belts?

could it be the pump?....we had one make a squeeling sound during the first 15 seconds of the spin, and then it quieted down, take the belt off and let it spin to see if the noise goes away?...

This could be a little far fetched, but Maytag started using a cheap motor pulley that was two piece affair which was crimped together. The crimp would go bad and one of the 2 pulleys would start to spin/slip within the crimp, making a racket, not to mention poor washing/spinning performance. Easiest method to check would be to remove both belts and see if you and spin both pulleys in opposite directions at the same time.......if that makes any sense.

I have both a good and crappy designed motor pulley that I should dig out and take a pic of to show the differences. I'll see if I can do that.

I think on the pulleys we mean can each pulley flange or half be turned separately-they should be unable to be turned separately.Cast and machined pulleys are best-the machined ones the best quality-during the machining process they are balanced to run smoohly with little or no vibration.Stampted two peice pulleys don't have this.Sadly these are used in most appliances and inexpensive power tools.The stampted pulleys are esp bad in table saws and shapers where you want the blade or cutter arbor to run with no vibration for smoothest and precise cuts.Machined pulleys will do best here-for appliances-the machine will run quieter and there will no pulley failures.

I washed a load of sheets tonight. It squealed during the first spin, but a lot less during the second spin. I wonder if it just needs to be used more. I wonder if it is the pump making the noise, because once the water is all gone and it's spinning at full speed the squeal stops.

We bought a Maytag 806 set in 1979 from DeHaan's in Parchment Michigan. It was the last of the lighted consoles. For perpetuity, it made a weird sound just like the one from Star Trek as the buttons were energized to beam you up or out. The repairman was out on a service call while it was under warrantee. He rocked the tub back and forth while working clear grease into the felts under the shroud where the transmission shaft passes through the floor of the cabinet. It made no difference but as the washer aged, one of the felts began to show looking bit like an errant panty liner. It was still making the same noise as it went to it’s next owner in 2000.
The washer in the picture is a single speed, larger capacity model from 1977, but with the same helical hush.

Looks like someone raised the water level a wee bit

That's pretty much where I raise the water level on all of my Maytags after they have been "burped."

I do adjust the water level on every Maytag I get. The prewash followed by soak is great for whites and I use it often. Why does the washer begin with less water on the second fill? The same thing happens with all Maytags on the rinse fill. If I'm close, I hold the Normal and ExLarge buttons in at the same time allowing more water to enter the tub.

Why does the washer begin with less water on the second fill

I found that it's air trapped somewhere between the inner and outer tub. That's what I meant by adjusting the water level after the tub has been "burped."

Next time the washer has filled about half way on the rinse cycle, shift the tub all the way to the right or left. You'll hear and sometimes see the trapped air gurgle to the surface. You'll also notice the water level drop and the washer will fill to the same height as the first fill.

No More Squeal!

No more squeal. I bought another y adapter for the faucets and have both washers hooked up, and have been using the Maytag more than the Frigidaire. The more I used the Maytag the lesser the squeal. It great to have a top loader again!

I didn't do anything after I got the washer hooked up to the faucets I washed several loads of clothes in it and each time it the squeal became less and less now it doesn't squeal at all.
