I have a problem with my old washer. After the initial washer cycle (Delicate), it does not empty the water, and then it actually starts another cycle (ie: Permanent Press).

HELP!!! Do I need to replace the timer?? Or is there another problem?

Thanks SOOO much!

Mark

Maytag A107 Washer -- cycle problem

Christfr --

Not sure if it bypasses either spins. My wife just ran a load on Permanent Press, it ran thru both spin cycles, and shut off normally.

My wife says that it just stops periodically.

I don't know...she's going to run another load right now.

I'll let you know after this load.

Thanks,

Mark

It sounds like something is blocking the drain system. Even a quarter will sit in the hole from the tub to the pump and block it. During agitation, when the pump is operating backward and pulling air in, the quarter will rise enough to allow the air in and might move around in the bottom of the tub, but when the washer starts to spin, the water carries the quarter back to the opening and it blocks the draining. Of course, something else can be clogging the hose or pump. Sometimes a small sock or a wad of lint will keep the machine from draining properly.

The reason the timer keeps going into a new cycle is that there is enough water left to satisfy the water level switch so the timer keeps advancing into the next cycle. This was a safety system of sorts in case a water valve did not close properly and water kept dripping or dribbling into the washer. Once enough water had leaked in to satisfy the water level switch, the machine would advance into wash and then spin out the tub of water without having the machine fill up and flood over the top and onto the floor. When it would hit the deep rinse cycle, it would fill and spin and sit there waiting for the dripping water to refill the machine. I thnk that once you take the hose off the bottom of the tub and from the top of the pump, you will be able to see what is blocking the water and be able to remove it without removing the outer tub cover and going fishing. Unless you have been smelling a burning belt, the pump is probably turning and the blockage is in the outer tub. Best of luck, Tom

Thanks Tom!

I will check out the pump and hose under the machine and see if there is a blockage.

I do not smell the belt burning. In fact, I replaced both belt last New Year's Day, with the help of this website forum. Until now, my old Maytag washer has never run better.

stopped running in drain cycle

I took off the hose between the tub bottom and the pump and it was clear. I also checked the tub itself, to see if there was something stuck in the bottom.

When I filled up the tub with water to see if would drain again with no leaks, it went just a bit thru the drain cycle and then stopped. The timer continues to work.

What now??

Maytags don't rest themselves from an unblanced load, they simply shut themselves off until they are assisted in balancing the load. The off balance switch is built into the lid switch, once it's tripped, the only way to reset the lid switch is to open the lid all the way and close it again. Then the machine will resume.

lid switch

I just tripped the lid switch, opening the lid all the way.

Then I closed the lid and tried to resume the load. I see and hear the timer working, but the machine won't aggitate or spin.

It sounds like your motor is cutting out. My experience is when the overload switch kicks out on the motor (which is self resetting after some time passes) the timer will still run.

Your motor could be getting ready to go, or you could have a binding problem in the transmission or with the pulleys.

Good Luck

Patrick

thanks Patrick

what would you suggest I check out first?

I replaced the 2 belts about 8 months ago. Should I make them tighter?

Thanks,

Mark

No, I don't think tightening the belts would help. I think the motor can't handle the load and it overheats and cuts out.

You have to determine if the transmission is binding or if the motor is just wearing out. Replacing the motor is the easiest IF that is what the problem is. If it's the transmission, then it may need a rebuild.

Can a more experienced Maytag person shed some light for Mark?

thanks, Patrick

the motor could be cuttin out because its to hot or if some thing in the trans is binding up that will do it to. after the motor cools down will it run the rest of the cycle or does it cut out again when it goes from agi to spin?

hey mark forgot to tell ya, your more than welcome to stop by anytime im in south county. or if all else fails if you not to far away i can stop by and listen to the machine but either way we can fix it

You need to change the timer. There are contacts in there and they are stuck or sticking or burnt and not allowing the machine to do what it is suppose to.

Chris -- motor cutting out

"after the motor cools down will it run the rest of the cycle or does it cut out again when it goes from agi to spin?"

Chris --

Yes, the motor will cut out again between agi and spin, most of the time. I usually have to reset the cycle to damp dry, to allow it to get the water out of the tub.

Could you please supply me with your phone number, so I can call you?

My phone number is 314/567-3394.

This is my last hope, or my wife will force me to buy a new machine, and I don't want to.

Thanks,

Mark
