Maytag A208 will not spin

I recieved my A208 about 2 years ago, and I have fixed a couple minor things on it and it has always worked great, but now it will not spin. It will wash, and drain, but when the spin cycle turns on, it will not spin. I first thought is was the belt, because when I lifted the washer up the belt that goes around the bigger gear had a cut in it so I replaced it, but it still will not spin, I lifted the washer up and seen that the other belt that goes around the 2 smaller gears spins fine but the other one will not, when I manually pull the other belt it does spin the other one, it just won't do it when the machine is on. The other belt seems to be fine so I am not sure what exactly is wrong. Any help would be great!

So, the water will drain from the tub, but the tub won't spin?

Does the motor and pulley spin when the spin cycle is selected?

Was there any odd noises coming from the washer during the spin cycle when it was spinning correctly? If so, it sounds like the tub bearing might have frozen up.

There's 2 belts. One goes to the pump (right front of the cabinet) and the other goes to the transmission (middle of the machine). Which belt did you replace?

If agitation was the problem, yes. But with a Maytag, the motor reverses, the the transmission pulley climbs up the helical shaft and lock up, and the entire trans/tub spin together. Internally, the transmission doesn't play a part in the spin cycle.

Where's Reverse?

Is it possible the motor isn't reversing? Mom's old ancient Maytag RIP (1972-1997) in the last days of it's life, would go occasionally finish the cycle without ever reversing. Tub of water and timer at the end of the cycle. If you’d pull the knob in and out in succession it would usually decide to stop agitating and spin. Could it be a motor issue?

That's what I'm thinking.

There's also the "cheap pulley syndrome" where the cheaper made pulleys would index between each other and slip instead of gripping the belts. I believe Maytag stated making the cheaper designed pulley's starting with the 10 series, but I could be wrong.

Must be the motor pulley or the timer that's the culprit.

Of course the springs and glides could be preventing the sliding motor carriage to perform properly, but you would at least get a little spin action though.

We need some more input from poster to be able to narrow down the problem.

Have the belts ever been replaced?

Usualy as a rule,the Maintanance calls for the belts and intake hoses to be replaced. If you look underneath and see the belts are shiny or stiff,not flexible,that may be the problem. I would elevate the front and be sure it's stabilised and turn the washer on to spin.If the belt slips and the motor runs,replacing the belts should work fine.If not then your trans is probably in need of replacement.The only other issue would be a particle of clothing stuck in between the inner and outer tubs causing the tub not to spin but usualy,if that's the case,the belt's strain would cause a burning rubber smell and eventualy,like with an upright vacuum that one tried using to pick up a paper towel,break and need replacement.I hope everything works out!
