Maytag A208 with Rusty Tub

It looks as if some "Washer Magic" cleaner may take some of that off. Has for staining things you wash, I would take the inner tub out and see just how rusty it is. I would also say this washer might have been in a damp basement for some of its life or was used with hard water.

I've cleaned up a few rusty tubs with CLR cleaner and a green scratch pad, tons of elbow grease. Also, most large grocery stores should have a Rust Remover liquid in the laundry aisle, brown bottle. As tough as it is to get that rust off the tub, I don't think you should worry much about stained clothes, unless they are white and you leave them long time in the washer when it's finished.

That looks to me like the machine was used with very hard water. My Maytag gets those same stains from the well water thru the inlet. I use Iron Out occasionally and it takes them right off. Wouldnt hurt after cleaning the rust stains off the inside tub to run a cycle through with some Iron Out to make sure the inside tub is fine and then you should have no problems.

RUST STAINED WASH BASKET
The rust stains your machine has were caused by using it with rusty water, it is not the tub rusting. You should be able to use it as it is, the rust may wear off very slowly and it wouldn't come off fast enough to stain even the best white clothes. Or if you like you can use some of the cleaners that others have suggested, but cleaning it is just for your satisfaction.

Maytag made a product called rover that removed that or you can rub it off with automotive rubbing compound.That is a common maytag problem.

There are lots of methods and suggestions to remove these stains. My Maytag was really badly stained when I bought it. I used SOS Pads and the basket now shines like brand new. HOWEVER, if you do go the SOS Pad route, remember to not scrub really hard, just scrub enough to remove the bulk of it (so you do not damage the tub), and then use CLR or Ironout cleaners to remove the rest.
I agree, it's totally from rusty water, not from the tub itself. Clothes won't get stained at all if you've got clear water!

I have to add that when I was a kid, we inherited (happily) my grandmother's '62 Wards Signature solid tub machine but we had since moved to an area notorius for rusty water. The final spin-spray rinse was the end of the machine for my mother when she pulled the "white load" out of the machine with rust-colored stripes on everything! I remember she marched right into Montgomery Wards wanting a new machine (this was 1975 by then) and told the poor salesman her troubles -- of course he insisted something was wrong with the old machine and sold her a new 1975 MOL machine. The perforated tub coupled with the (then) final spin spray rinse solved the rusty tie-dye problem. Still sad to this day that I didn't know what the problem was then due to the solid tub combined with a rusty spin spray rinse cuz I'd kill for that '62 Wards machine!

Don't forget
Barkeepers Friend! when applied to rust, usually removes almost immediately (don't scrub too hard)
