Well I finally was able to move the machine back far enough to get a look as the tag to get some numbers. If anyone has an NOS or good working used timer for sale I sure could use it. Mine stops after going into the first 30 seconds of the first spin cycle and I have to wiggle the timer to get it going again. Already cleaned the contacts but they're too burned now to bother. I bought a new #204889 timer off Ebay but it seems thats for a later machine. Mine has the skritch timer. Thanks.

Do they look alike? I know mine is a more compact timer but its pretty wide. Not like the typical long flat style timers. Would that be a Kingston? I may have to remove the top cover and look. This machine also has a delicate setting and when I press that button while agitating it stops. Is this the timer also or a bad two speed motor? Also, are the Mallory and Kingston interchangable? Thanks.
 
Maytag A500 timer in an A407?

Was digging in the shop last night and found the timer from that 1965 A500 I scrapped . Will this timer work in my 1974 A407? Would be sweet if it did because its a good timer. Thanks.
 
Timer For A MT A407

Maytag used two different timer manufactures for most of their machines from the 60s through the 90s.

 

The timers like the one on the A407 had individual wires on them were either a Mallory [ square shape mostly metal ] and the crappier Kingston timers [ black mostly plastic ] both of these timers are completely interchangeable, you just have to be careful to get all the wires on the correct terminals.

 

The timer from a A500 will NOT work on a A407.
 
Combo52 thanks for the info. I guess my original timer is a Mallory in the machine. The new replacement I bought ( #204889) is a Kingston timer. I tried installing it but the terminal count was wrong and also location of the wires. It also had two terminals that werent used. The machine wouldnt work correctly and the cycles were way off. Im wondering if there was an early 407 and late one and they had two different timers? I was hoping the 500 timer would have interchanged because its a known good timer. That machine just had a burnt motor start winding and a rotted spin basket.

I thought the same thing but it lost a spin cycle and most of the first agitate cycle. I really dont think the 204889 Kingston is the correct timer. I pulled the cover off the machine today and I have a Mallory 2-4889-1 timer. Im trying to find a used one but may have a lead on an NOS one on Ebay if he has any left. I guess it fots A107 also. Thanks.
