I know these little spinner tubs were fast but could any of these things wash clothes worth a damn?

Well yes, and no

Aside from tangling, the wash action of my Hoover is very strong. However cycle times are far to short to deal with heavy dirt and stains. But going too long can risk creating a tangled mess. Thus one option would be to stop machine and let things soak. This or pre-wash/soak badly things first say in a tub, then wash.

If push came to shove, and space no object I'd go for a wringer or even a compact/portable washer with a central beater over any impeller twin tub.

I used to have a Maytag A50 and used it exclusively fo 4 years. It did an amazingly good job of cleaning and the spin tub really got the clothes extracted very well. It essentially worked like a wringer washer, but the extraction is far superior to a wringer. Believe it or not I used to wash my double size chennial bedspread and blankets in this A50, only one at a time, but they washed up nicely. It was a perfect solution for me at the time as I lived in an apartment with out any hookups for a washer. BTW, this A50 replaced a Whirlpool convertable washer that was a POS. It never cleaned as well as the A50. The impellers on the A50 really churn up the water and a 5 min wash was almost always all that was needed. With the occasional highly soiled item I might run an additional 1 or 2 mins of wash time,, but that was rare.

Had a Whirlpool Convertible/Portable As Well

That sold on to another member.

While it cleaned better than the Hoover TT (and with much less noise), got something new and thus it had to go.

Think with the Maytag TT comes with benefit of having dual impellers, which probably helps with the tangling issue.

Have never been able to do large items such as bed sheets or blankets in the Hoover TT. Well small sheets perhaps.... You have to get things going right so they swirl round, otherwise it is just tangle city.

Launderess, you are absolutely correct about the dual impellers on the A50, they did prevent tangling. While I have never used a Hoover Twin Tub, I can see that the single impeller could be a issue with tangling, this was never a problem with the Maytag A50. I also think that since the A50 impellers reversed direction through out the washing cycle this also prevented tangling, just my 2 cents worth.
