I just picked up an old Maytag A606. I thought it looked retro, but had no idea there are fans of these machines out there until I found this site.

A couple of questions if I may - is there a way to determine the year? It has the four water levels and the serial number is 308708MU if that helps.

All the markings on the main dial are worn off. Does anyone have one of these that they could take a sharp close-up photo of so I can see what it used to say? Or is there a diagram somewhere?

Finally, what is one of these worth? I intend to use it, but now I'm curious.

Thanks
Steve

Hey Steve,

Welcome, and congrats on the nice find! Your 606 was made approx. September of 1971 (thanks for the serial!). When it comes to value, it all depends on what you would pay for it, and what someone else would pay to take it off your hands. These machines can range anywhere from Free to 50 dollars, depending on condition a abuse. I've included a A606 panel from a brochure, but is a Series before your model, but will give a good idea of what the markings are. Keep us posted!

That's too funny!

I have an early 70s theme going here. My house was built in 71, I have a 71 Chevelle, my Harley is a 72 and now this washer is a 71.

Thanks for the dial info. I am going to purchase it and clean this baby up!

Absolutely one of the most stupid things I've done...

So I am bringing this into my house. My kids are not here, my girlfriend is out of town, my brother is busy, the neighbors are not home. I decide to bring the machine downstairs by myself. If you have any experience with this machine, you know it weighs as much as a Sherman tank. Can you guess what's next?

Half way down the stairs, a wheel shears off the dolly and it rips out of my hands. The Maytag falls about three steps, crashes into the wall, punching a serious gash in the wall, and bending the control panel back about an inch. It is suspended by the control panel and the bottom step. After some serious adrenalin, I muster the strength to lift it back up.

I managed to bend the control panel support back into its original position, so cosmetically, it looks just as it did. The problem is that now when plugged in, NOTHING happens. I know this machine works since the old couple I bought it from this afternoon had to put the wet clothes into the dryer when I arrived to pick it up!

I checked where the power cord comes into the machine, and it's getting power. Any idea where to look next? What might happen to a machine subjected to a hefty impact?

Any ideas? Did I just trash my new treasure?

IT

I am not sure what happened, but after unplugging each wire and putting them back on, it now works! I guess it was just a loose connection.

Now I have no doubt why you all love these machines so much. If I'd done that with a new machine, it would have folded like a pop can. I am impressed! Now, I just need to patch the drywall before my girlfriend gets back...

One final question - what is that cup thing that inserts into the top of the agitator?

Hey Steve,

The small cut is your fabric softener dispenser. I've had my fair share of falling Maytag's - my A702 fell 15 feet after slipping off the dolly. I got lucky and it didn't have any battle wounds, but it did jar the off-balance! Let us know if you need anything else ~

Did I read that right?

15 feet? Holy Moly! Was that a typo or did it really fall 15 feet and survive? That's incredible! I don't know of any product that could withstand that type of trauma and survive!

If it really was 15 feet, I will never buy anything other than old Maytags as long as I live.

If I read that correctly, I am truly a believer!

I'll bet the off balance/lid switch broke. Did you try opening and closing the lid? If it still doesn't work, first remove the control panel top and look at the switch to see if it is in place. If everything is ok there, you will have to remove the front panel and flip the top up to inspect the switch parts.

Close call, the main thing is that you weren't injured

If you don't already have an appliance dolly - the type with a belt that cinches up and rollers that help it up or down stairs, get one. They are also called "refrigerator dollies" but they aren't only for fridges. They aren't that expensive and they are well worth whatever they cost. I've seen them at Home Depot, Costco, and Harbor Freight. I've been able to muscle my 78 GE Filter-Flo in and out of the house with my appliance dolly. And that thing weighs a ton.

It also works on big old Wedgewood stoves.

Hi. What did we do before refrigerator dollies with the strap? I lost grip of my aunt's A806 on the basement stairs when she moved. Slid like an avalanche all the way down. No paint left on the side (oops!) but it ran just like before!
By the way, your A606 is a keeper. It is my second favorite of my Maytags, it seems to be so much quieter that the 608s, I have no idea why. I just wish they put bleach dispensers in them.

By the way Steve, the blue Permanent Press cycle has no markings, just the wash minutes. Soapy, bleachy fingers and spray prewash takes the markings off the dial and buttons, so be careful.

Me again...

Can anyone tell me how to get the knob off so I can replace the dial?

Thanks - this is a great resource!
