I have my parents maytag a606 washer and I'm having difficulty in getting the knob to push in. I have to jiggle the knob with slight pressure before it finally pushes in. Once the knob finally goes in everything works fine. How does the knob engage? I've looked online for diagrams of the knob but can't figure out how it works.

A606 timer

Thanks for the video on taking the knob off bpetersxx. After looking online at parts diagrams I kinda thought it came apart like that but a picture is worth a thousand words. And Thanks to combo52 for the shaft lubing advice.I take it that the shaft basically moves in and out (and rotates?).Just trying to visualize it in my head. I will take the knob off later this week. Hopefully this will remedy the problem. Thanks All

A606 timer

Well I got the knob and dial off my a606 timer no problem. The teeth on the knob and dial engage just fine but when I put it back on the shaft they won't engage. It seems the knob hits the pin on the shaft making the teeth not making contact. I sprayed some silicone lube on the shaft but my question is does the part of the shaft with the pin in it supposed to slide in just slightly over the main part of the shaft? I think this is my problem. Any one care to chime in?

A606 timer

Problem solved. After looking closely with a magnifying glass I figured it all out. With lube on the shaft just behind that pin thru the shaft (kinda hard to get the lube in there because of the angle) now it moves in and out like it should. Advice about lubing it up was spot on.

Maytag a606

Thanks for the date code explanation. For some reason I thought it was older. What years did they make the a606's? Getting back to the timer when I initially took the knob and dial off I was a little confused. Looking closely with a magnifying glass (on the shaft) and seeing how the knob and dial teeth engaged, when the shaft finally pushed in it all made sense. Lubing it was key. Did 2 loads today and it worked like a charm. These are tough old machines.
