Maytag A608 find

Found this today at D&D appliance sitting out back waiting for the scrap man. I think it's a 1977 model? The serial # is 565605 ZU, am I close?

I am far from being an expert on the numbers, my mom bought her harvest gold A608/DE608 set in September of 1977.
Almond was not yet out, and you could get them in white, avocado, coppertone and gold.
I have an Almond A608/DG608 set from 1979. The washer is in use, the dryer not yet.

So when did Maytag do away with the "center dial" style?

Yay! I got it right for a change! Actually, I 'kinda guessed it. I went by date codes on several parts, the newest being May '77. I don't know why, but I always have to know when units that I collect were made.

Beautiful machine. It appears to be in excellent condition. How does she run? I can't imagine why anyone would give up such a nice machine.

Can anyone explain the serial number/date schema for Maytag or any other brands?

I always found the hunt for machines as the most fun. It's like "Wow, what have I found?". Like opening presents on Christmas.

Well, it seems to work ok. There are no rust issues either. I did notice some gear oil slung around on the pulley and around the sides of the bottom of the machine. Not a lot, but enough to make me think they trashed it for that reason.
I would like to tear down and rebuild the tranny anyway on a 'Tag, so maybe this would be a good candidate.
Are parts readily available for these still? Any hints or tips on the rebuild, or is it fairly straight forward?
