Maytag AMP washer spin question

Hey everyone. I just recently got a Maytag AMP automatic Washer. The model number is 121P. And everything works on it except whenever it goes to spin it tries to agitate and spin at the same time and it will not even get up enough speed to throw all the water out of the tub. I took off a cover on the main pulley today. There was some kind of clutch in there and it was completely saturated in oil. I thought for sure that that would take care of the problem but after cleaning it real good with some acetone and putting it back together there was no change in the performance. I am very unfamiliar with these washers as this is the first one I've ever had and I've never even seen one in real life until now. I plan on repainting it and trying to make it look decent again. I believe it is a very bottom of the line model though as it has a Black ringer washer style agitator. If I'm correct the more high-end ones have a red agitator and the Maytag emblem on the front also lights up. I was just hoping someone on here might be able to tell me what the problem is so I can get it fixed and working properly again .

Congrats Jason, this is a clean 121P. Only a few of these have showed up, and honestly they are the easiest of any original AMP to get going due to the timed fill vs. the cumbersome mercury switches/rubber diaphragms on the metered fill models.

Sounds like the trip lever may be hanging up on the torque spring. A few threads are out there from other folks getting their washers up and going in the past - take a look:

There is a slight chance that the brake shoes are stuck against the drum, which requires removal of the center cross brace. There are detailed instructions on how to remove the cross brace to access the brake in the repair manual, available on AE.org.

These run on a 'wet' clutch, so hopefully you left some oil on the clutch shoes.

Congratulations!

What does the wise dog think of the washer? Did it pass the sniff test?

 

I like washers that you can watch operating which eliminates all of the AMP-style machines except for these time-fill models.

When I got mine

I posted my AMP here and got some advice. You may look at post no. 46 and see Austin's advice. I sprayed the collar with wd40 and that is all it took to get mine going.

OK thanks for the advice. I plan on tearing it all down here soon and going through it very thoroughly. Hopefully between the service manual I got and all the info you guys have shared with me I can get it running good again.
