Hi everyone! Hope you’ve had fun over the holidays. I’ve currently got a very sad 2003 Maytag Atlantis sitting in my garage. It still runs, but very poorly. It has a groan and clunk that comes and goes during agitation, and agitated during the spin cycle. Right about the time it gets up to speed in the spin cycle, the transmission slips, the brake slams on, and it’s back to square one again. I’ve already ordered the center gear for the transmission (which I’m 99% sure is the problem). My question, however, is related to the transmission’s oil. How much and what grade of oil do these Herrin platform transmissions use?
Thanks,
Thatwasherguy.

Amount and type of oil

For a Norge Heron built transmission, just fill it about the same level that you found in it
70 weight to 90 weight oil would be fine. This is the least of your problems you could even dump the old oil back and if it's not contaminated.

Good luck, John

Thanks for the info!

I wound up just reusing the old oil, as it still looked fine. The only damage was to the locking tabs on the center gear, which would explain the problems during spin. I’ve put the transmission back in, and it now appears to work as designed. I’ll upload a before and after video of a quick wash cycle once I get it all back together.
