Maytag brake assembly

Can anyone tell me if this brake assembly will fit my 1958 Maytag washer? Model # is: 142S
I have already tried to oil it, but it did not work. Still screams like crazy.

Yep! That one will work. While you're in there, I'd also replace the radial bearing (Original Maytag number 2-720).

Thank you Ben! I had asked the seller, however I did not get a response from them. Perhaps he did not know if it would fit. I did the "buy it now" for the brake assembly, and will purchase the bearing locally at Home Appliance Parts.

Sure is noisy. Not like a vintage Maytag at all!!

brake assembly overhaul

Looked on youtube for a Maytag old school brake assembly overhaul, i.e. change the shoes, etc. Anybody have any info on that. I mean instead of changing the whole assembly out. Les.

I gotta believe that changing the assembly is much much easier than trying to rebuild one.

Hi Kenny, The Hamiltons are doing great! I ran a gas line for the dryer last summer, and have been using it from time to time. The washer works great, and has a very large capacity for 1967. I am retired now, so when you get to Fort Wayne, give me a call!

Brake Assembly In Two Belt MT Washers

Are all interchangeable from 1956-2006. These seldom ever give problems but if they do it is better to just change the whole thing and you would be very safe in using a good used one. By the later 70s through 2006 these almost never gave problems and good used ones are a dime a dozen, we still recycle so many MT DC washers every month that I don't even save these anymore as there is very little need for them.

The brake arrived via USPS this morning. I installed it this afternoon, and did two loads in the machine tonight. It works perfectly again, as a vintage Maytag should! The brake started being noisy about a year ago. It didn't screech at first, just made a sort of a moaning sound, as the brake was applied. Then the metal to metal sound started this past Fall, so I stopped using it. I had used oil in it, as directed by so many on this site, however it made no change. John L. stated that the older Maytag brakes were somewhat trouble prone, so I wonder how many of these old models (mine is a 1958) were sent to an early demise because of the brake noise. I mean it sounded TERRIBLE! Metal to metal grinding screech. At any rate, thank you all for the help and advice!
