My wife and I were lucky enough to recently acquire a (barn-find) Maytag washer and dryer set in beautiful condition. After having purchased a Maytag Bravos set new 4 years ago this was a dream come true for us. We absolutely hated the Bravos set almost immediately, what complete junk! Boy how we missed our old 1970’s Kenmore (Whirlpool) dryer and 1990’s Kenmore cheap (Whirlpool) washer. They weren’t much, but darn it, they were reliable and cleaned our clothes. And on the rare occasion they actually needed repair, it was usually pretty simple.
These “new” Maytags we just acquired are a CA 606 washer (Feb. 1973) and a CDE 606 Dryer (Dec. 1972). We had let our old Kenmore set go with the sale of our last home, not realizing you couldn’t just go buy a simple, cheap, old-fashioned washer and dryer set anymore. So… in frustration I went looking on Craigslist for replacements like our old ones, still in serviceable shape, to replace our Bravos set. I ran across these being sold by a storefront kept by a local auction house. The gentleman in there, the owner, said that they had supposedly been in storage for over 10 years. Honestly, they looked like it inside and out. In fact, to me, an untrained eye, they appeared to have been stored perhaps much longer than that. The drums inside were clean and unscratched, and inside the cabinets the motors and floors of the cabinets had little dust or residue at all. They honestly looked like they had hardly ever been used. I’m no expert though, I could be wrong. Inside the washer were it’s hoses, which looked to me as though they may have been the originals, and they were still very clean and new looking. The light on the front washer panel also still works, although it’s kind of a flickery light. The push buttons on the front have some of the writing worn off, so they were obviously used, I just cant tell how much.
Our Bravos dryer is natural gas, so I didn’t want to move it out yet until we sell the Bravos set, I don’t want to unhook it and hook it back up to show a buyer that it works. I did, however, move the Maytag washer in, and it works so well I can’t get my wife to let me move it back out and put the Bravos washer back in so that we can sell the darned things and go completely to the old Maytags.
Now, a minor problem, if someone on here could perhaps give me some advice. The washer does not appear to have an “out-of-balance” switch off and/or buzzer. It should have one, right???? Can anyone tell me where it is, what it looks like, how I might fix it, etc. We washed a couple of bathroom throw rugs the other day and it went majorly out of balance and “walked” about 8” across the floor before I could run across the house and shut it off. I’d like to fix this before it happens again.
Thank you all!
Mike
