Parts Machine?

I'm willing to bet you'd have half the group drive/fly out, drag you out of your house and nail you to the cross if that beauty ended up as a parts machine ;)

So, is there any reason why you haven't hooked up some water and plugged that baby in to see what happens? GO FOR IT!!!!
 
There was a gas drying/vented version, but not produced as long as the electric; introduced after the electric.

It had a good condenser with a spray of water introduced into the blower housing, similar to their water dryers. It was a more efficient dryer than those that condensed by just running a sheet of water down the inside of the tank.

The water heater did not use a separate element; it just turned on the dry heater (Calrod-type element located in the upper area between inner and outer tubs) during wash, like the first GE combo. When John used the water heater in his with work uniforms treated with Spray & Wash, the petroleum distilates would produce a smokey haze in the upper part of the drum.

One design flaw with the machine is that the plastic baffles are screwed in from the outside of the drum so if one breaks, the tub has to be pulled to correctly install a new one.

Wow Ben that is absolutely awesome, CONGRATS!!! That machine looks to be in incredible condition, like it was just unboxed! Just stunning!

I am just amazed and in awe every time someone finds some incredible or rare machine, that looks like it's been sitting with little or no use for the last 40+ years!

You have been VERY fortunate in that department! I'm sure there are others, but the two that really stand out in my mind are the Bendix combo and this Maytag Combo!

Question: Where are the water and drain connections on this machine? They are not visible in any of your photos.

Thanks guys for your kind comments! The Bendix Duomatic is a far cry, condition-wise, in comparison to the Maytag. While the Duomatic had little use it sat in a limestone basement in upstate NY for all of its life - thus it needs a complete tear down. The Maytag shouldn't require nearly as much attention as the Duo will (even though they are severely trouble-prone). The Maytag came from Lanerd, KS.

Togs - it may take a few days but I can post copy from the service manual that should help clear up any questions on how the condensing system works on the Maytag. Tom's write up is spot on!

Kevin - the 4 solenoid water valve is at the bottom right hand side of the base. It requires a complete cabinet tear down if it needed servicing - just one of the many lovely service-minded engineering decisions made with this machine. The pump hose would exit to the left of the electrical block (currently missing from the machine.

That is an amazing find. I hope you find it to your liking and that you can get it washing and drying as intended. I would be interested to see a comparison of this to other washer/dryers like Bendix to compare design methodology and performance. Maytag was known for such superior engineering, I wonder why the combo is so comparatively crude in some respects (cabinet access!)?

Ben, an absolutely stunning find! I know that water valve well, having just sent the NOS valve I found to Kim. (Hey, Kim! when you gonna start your resto nudge... nudge...) I can hardly wait to see some pics/video of that gorgeous creature running!

What a fun weekend! It's rare that we get to share in seeing the pure joy on our friend's faces but seeing Ben get this combo was as good as any Christmas morning could hope to be. It really is a beautiful machine and with a little bit of work and a couple of 240v relays for the longevity-protection of the timer, Ben will be washing and drying in the same drum very soon.

I'll post some more pictures this week from the trip - and of the timer repair that wouldn't have been possible without the support and help of Ben for my Maytag combo.

Bob - Steven had a copy of the parts book for the Combo. No owner's manual to be found.

Dave - these machines were a disaster for servicing. We take for granted the simplicity built into the Helical top loading washers. The combo - while a beautiful machine, is a rushed together production of a machine. With Bendix tying up the good patents, it left the other manufactures to come up with creative ways to put a combo on the market. While they were creative, they also weren't very practical in terms of longevity. I am starting to scan the repair manual now, and will include the section here titled: How it Works.
