I had one of those a few years ago in harvest gold that I got from someone at the now defunct "Gibraltar Trade Center", a weekend flea market sort of thing here in Maccomb county.
My father threw it out on me along with a few other things I owned at the time including a vintage "GEM" floor polisher/scrubber that was similar to an modern Oreck Orbiter.
The answer to your question is no, they don't work better than an ordinary HOH dryer, at least I cannot imagine that they do(I have never owned a full size, so no direct comparison) with only a 110 volt heater drawing, at best 15 amps. I don't know the exact figures. The timer has recommended times on it for various loads that are very long, many in excess of an hour. It has been quite a while since I owned this, so my recollections could be a little off, I was probably 10 years old at the time.

Compact 120 volt HOH Dryers
Were fashioned after the large ones but shared only the outer door with the big dyers, they worked OK but were very limited in size.
They were not nearly as durable as the large HOH dryers and a PITA to work on with the exception of changing the cheap blower belt which would break every few years if you actually tried to use the dryer much. The other big problem on these dryers was the thin Teflon slides that the drum turned on, these wore out fairly quickly and if you did not replace them soon enough it destroyed the front heater shroud and the drum itself.

DE 50 dryer
I still have mine. I used it for 10 yrs! It is in storage and needs new belts. Don't know where to buy the slides if I needed them. The belts can be custom made I am told. Wish I had room to use it and its washer mate. I don't see why they are hard to work on. I took mine apart before storing it and it looks simple. Do you have one??
