@Chetlaham later maytag perfoma washers have moved from porcelain wash basket to plastic wash basket i will never understand why they did that switch call it strange but my mom and i had to go with vintage maytag this would be the set to go with dependable care easy to use set wash rinse temp needed water level and voila just set washer to needed wash time and let washer do its work no sensors no atc taking overPhoto-Aug-08-1-34-44-PM-600x450_w600_h600.jpgPhoto-Aug-08-1-34-51-PM-600x450_w600_h600.jpgPhoto-Aug-08-1-34-57-PM-600x450_w600_h600.jpgPhoto-Aug-08-1-35-05-PM-600x450_w600_h600.jpg535031278_10224761527580435_701455882003752422_n.jpg536769385_10224761529100473_4913994135575488629_n.jpg

Final Maytag dependable care washers

Even though these were the best top load may tag dependable care machines they built they were still inferior to virtually every other top load washer sold in the US at the time only the WCI Frigidaire stuff was as poor and overall performance, but even they had neutral drain and no nasty off balance, which to make the machine non-automatic.

Maytag pursuit using the Norge tag design because it performed much better than their dependable care design and consumers liked it much better, they even said in the advertising literature for the Norge tag machines that your clothing would come out cleaner and brighter because of the better draining and rinsing system.

Maytag did it to compete with Whirlpool sales. Make a low cost large capacity machine with lots of features and cycle options. This was the worst mistake Maytag ever made. These machine did not last. They had a lot of break downs, some rather scary. Word got around fast, Maytag's reputation was ruined. And it is things like putting "Performa" on both the best and worst machines Maytag ever sold which made their accomplishments and embarrassments indistinguishable from one another.

Maytag should never have made another top load design. They should have only sold the dependable care under various names and made various iterations of the dependable care from one knob wonders to TOL LCD models. Cheapen nothing, have the control system be as dependable as the drive mechanism. This may not have boosted sales initially but it would have protected Maytag's reputation. With time would have picked up a bit I think. I personally would have loved to have an Atlantis style machine with dependable care internals, load sense agitator and a metal timer.

If everyone was like me the Dependable Care design with a redesigned agitator would have absolutely dominated the market. It would have been what the direct drives were.

Regarding spin-draining it is not only superior overall but imbalances only happen when the water level is to high for the load. For this reasons I think even absolute BOL model should have a small load option.

Didn't the Performa machines have a transmission that used all plastic gears?
I've seen the video of a guy pulling one apart, and inside were stripped out gear teeth and broken bits of those teeth all over the inside the damn transmission..
To hell with that crap!....
At least as far as I know, the dependable care machines had metal gearing.
So much for "modern improvements" and that "cost cutting" BS.

Pierre, let me be the one to apologize. I am sorry.

You can always get a used DC or Kenmore washer and I think that would suite your needs best.
no need to feel sorry @Chetlaham i think like you on that side curently doing a load but i am so angry at the machine that it do not went to use warm water or hot when these temp are selected so stuck to using tap cold and quick wash max fill water level 1:09 minutes on quick wash because of the poor wash action if set to just 38 minutes i relly love this design and side opening lid569c82b0-eb1b-49f7-8992-ae83ef2fd34f.jpg

IIRC, the orbital transmission had a plastic drive gears.

That is your best bet. You can't go wrong with a multi speed direct drive and ATC.

All Maytag washers had at least one plastic gear in the transmission

The LAT Maytag dependable care machines were actually much lower price than the Norge tag machines, they sold the Norge tag machines because they were more competitive with whirlpool and Kenmore because they held more and did a better job.

Facts can be a very stubborn thing, lol

Yes, BUT.....
The single plastic gear in the Helical drive is the smallest, and first gear in the drive chain, which is under the least amout of stress/torque during agitation, thus making it's job the easiest.

My grandfather has a Performa electric dryer which I really do like, always wondered what it would've been like if he had a matching Performa washer but he still had his old washer just like the brown one in reply #4 working at the time. Maybe he would've still had the Performa washer today if he also replaced his other washer at the time, or maybe not. Either way, I wish he had a Neptune set just like at his cabin. Those are my favorites from Maytag and they would've been perfect for handing stuff that either of the top loaders couldn't do. But for certain I'd take a Performa or his old top loader over what he has now which is a piece of crap Maytag Centennial with an impeller.
