I picked up a Maytag DG310 for a friend that's buying his first house soon, and found out after I got home that it had been converted to propane. I'm 99.9% sure my friend's house has natural gas.

The dryer seems to be in excellent condition but has not been connected to any gas supply yet. It doesn't appear to have been used in quite a while, I was told it came with the house and had been hooked up but there was no longer gas being supplied (propane tank empty I assume) for over a year but they had turned it on and it ran. Came out of an old cottage that was previously owned by two old sisters but rarely used so I'm assuming very low mileage.

It does run, but noisy (already fixed that, I believe) and I've started cleaning it out, just some lint, nothing too crazy. I'm pretty sure this is one of the older dryers I've had but it seems to be built like a tank.

What I need to do now is convert it back to Natural gas so it can be used (and so I can test it), whatever that may take (within reason of course, I'm not spending a lot on it) I've done this on a Whirlpool dryer before, but haven't honestly done a whole lot with Maytag dryers.

I've also got a Maytag Neptune MAH3000 washer that I believe needs a wax motor but I'll add details on that in the Deluxe forum. All in all, should be a decent set and last a while. I'll try for pictures after all is said and done but sadly I don't have any yet.

This is an older "stream of heat" dryer from around 1982 according to one result here- the lint filter is in the front, woodgraim control panel, white buttons. Will definitely try to get pictures!

Converting A MT Dryer Back To NG

The main thing you need is a 20,000-22,000 BTU orifice, you can even drill out the one on the dryer if you research the size needed for 20-22,000 BTUs and do it carefully or just steal it from another WP or MT dryer [ most companies used White-Rogers burners and most parts are interchangeable.

The cap on the pressure regular should also be changed back to a NG one, but it will work on NG without doing this, you just don't have a pressure regulator.

Would it be safe to run if I just replace the orifice or would it be better to do both? And also if it makes a difference, it's a DG510 rather than 310, must not have seen it properly yesterday...

Propane to natural conversion

You can't order the conversion kit unless you are a gas technician certified to work on a gas appliance. Found this out when we moved from our old house with propane to our new house with natural. Tried to order from Fox appliance parts and they wouldn't order for me. Tried the local gas company same answer. That's the way it is done in GA. If it is not done properly it can caused a house fire or even blow your house up. Please be careful!!!

Luck was on my side with our 1986 gas DG512 Stream of heat dryer. My dad worked for the local propane company. He told me to keep the old natural to propane conversion kit which was the plunger which goes into the regulator and the orifice. I was able to reverse the conversion from propane to natural.

You can't order the conversion kit

Might be a Georgia reg or just the policy of the vendor you tried.

I've ordered and installed a couple of NG conversion kits from Ebay no problem.

it had been converted to propane.

Did you check inside the dryer cabinet or control panel?

Whomever did the conversion might have had brain in their head and left behind the old NG orifice in case the dryer needed to be changed back to NG in the future.

Sorry

I didn't see the kits can be bought from Ebay. Its only if you buy from a parts retailer. Of course you can buy pretty much anything from Ebay.

I did check in the cabinet, but not the control panel. It's all cleaned out now and ready to be re converted, that and a new light bulb and it should be good to go.

Pretty well cleaned up, will need a good wipe down anyway, my friend is hoping to be in his house within the next month or so and I said I'd hold onto it.
